Try that 8 speed paired with the current diesel. It's shifting like a mad man all the time to stay in that torque curve.

I don't care how sharp the shifts are or whatever else, it is simply boring and disengaging from the driving experience, while sapping what makes the N52 great.

I've just drove a newer X3 & 5 series with the 4 Cylinder/8spd. The start stop feature is probably the single most annoying thing on newer cars..

That was the first thing that I disabled when I got the 328i loaner.

You'd think the Start/Stop feature would beat the hell out of the starter motor over time... Unless it works a different way than I think.

The start stop and electric steering get the honors

EPS is the worst part by far, followed by the required turbos and then the stop start BS/assorted "driving modes".

Before long, electric cars and bikes going to roam the roads with required auto pilot on (only way to enforce dumb speed limits).
Regarding your comment about the auto box, I put over 10k miles on mine and while I don't expect to change your mind, I am fine with it in sport manual mode, it does not kill the fun of the N52. I initially would change it to full auto in traffic but when ever I stepped on it encountered unwanted hesitation/lag. Driving only in sport manual eliminates the lag and gives me control of being in any gear I want and when need to floor it, stays in gear, as does the manual box. Yes, if driving n52 stick is 100% fun, driving it in sport manual is close to it, say 95% fun. I suspect you'd like it. To sum it up, I am happy with my car, and yes, I'd be 5% happier with a stick

Well... I test drove both and opted for the Auto. I'm not that much of an enthusiast or a racer and live Los Angeles. I figured that I would miss the manual for the 15% of time that I want to race around and would love the Auto when I am mindlessly sitting in traffic. All that being said, I look at manual 135i's and think hmmm...maybe I should have... and that's not the best feeling.

The one thing I've got going for me is that a few years back I traded my 328i for a Honda Civic hybrid (I wanted the carpool stickers) and had driven that for a few years. My other car (and my daily driver) is an '87 Vanagon (manual) that is 3500+ lbs and 90 horsepower. Coming from driving those cars, the 128i even with the auto feels like a freakin race car! I love it and it puts a smile on my face when I drive it.

Just don't take it personally if you pull up next to me in your 135 and I look the other way.

You're in RPV, huh?

I'm in Torrance... I might've seen your car around town... What color is it?

I think it's called Mineral Grey Metallic and has the red interior. I've had it for two weeks now. I bought it used with 5500 miles on it. Just got the windows tinted yesterday. I will try to post a picture/add an avatar when I figure out how. I plan on going to some of the SoCal events to check out other 1's, mods and upkeep ideas etc...

GM6; Too fuel inefficient in my day to day driving & my commute does not lend itself to enjoying sport manual mode.

Nope, I'm only familiar with horror stories from two master mechanics in regards to Northstar V8's. I've also encountered people with issues first hand too, one guy was putting two quarts of oil in while at the gas station getting fuel. I think he said the motor had less than 60k on it

Possibly the worst engine BMW has ever made.

The engine noise created through the speakers in some of the newer M cars is really cheesy.

The 128i Automatics are not bad at all for what they were intended to do. My wife drives the 128 auto convertible and I drive the 135i coupe 6 speed. I end up driving the 128 when going to the movies, etc. The 135i when I go around the island or go to the local autocross.

Whoa, just a minute here! I love the manual trans as much as anyone BUT there are reasons for the auto trans! For me, it was a bad left knee and the surgery made it hard to operate the clutch. If you sit in much traffic, the auto is a must. It is easier to eat and drink a Red Bull, text, read a paper, put on make-up...OK, I'm kidding of course. All I am saying is it is better to drive a BMW 1 with an auto than not driving one at all!

I've inquired about this 128i. The only option is M-Sport package. Wonder if I would regret not getting moonroof, electric seats, heated seats, comfort access, ect. I would really like the upgraded headlights and HK audio but oh well. I am tall so the lack of moonroom and electrical seats may help with that.

Surgery and a bad knee is a completely valid excuse!

It would be trivial to design a starter that would reliably do that for many thousands of miles. Starting a warm engine is a piece of cake for a starter.
