Update: 126K mi, charge pipe had small cracks around diverters; replaced belt and pulley(s) mostly maintenance, but upon inspection, one of them was starting to roll rough. Carbon cleaned valves.

You put far more faith in BMW's than I do. Is this your first? They make reliable motors/transmissions/diffs and that's about it. And when I say motors, I mean the motor itself, not accessories attached to it.

Put it this way, if you're on a long trip and something goes wrong and you don't have the tools with you to work on it yourself, you're kind of screwed. There aren't a ton of shops that have the available parts (or knowledge) to work on them. So even a relatively minor failure, like a water pump, becomes a pretty big deal in both the cost and the amount of time it takes to have someone fix it.
I carry a tool roll but would be reluctant to really tear into my BMW if it quit on a trip. I doubt it will. The daughters high mileage cars have been pretty reliable but the Cherokee had cooling system issues that forced repairs twice now. I don't know if it was the cause or the effect but it needed a different head the last time (it had a crack which they are known for). The Corolla's only forced repairs were the result of a wreck but were to the suspension which was probably pretty worn before the wreck. Their longest trips are 2-3 hours coming home from College and going back. Their cars are fine for this. I would much prefer my bimmer for a trip than either of their cars for multiple reasons. We've taken it to the Port Canaveral a couple times now for cruises. I'm not concerned with it on trips (and I also do not have run flats or a spare either).

I find it funny how many people say they are scared to take their 1er on a road trip, 3 weeks ago I went on a 1400 mile road trip in my 135i (mods in sig) original water pump and I am sitting just shy of 76k miles now. Set the cruise at 80mph most of the way (90mph for a nice long stretch) windows down and just cruised and still averaged 27mpg for the whole trip (worst tank was 25mpg). Very comfortable road trip car and I trust it completely, it has also made several trips from Iowa to Minneapolis and back without worry. Love this car, first newer BMW I have owned, but certainly not the last!

31,000 miles.

Just doesn't get driven now that the 911 is in the fleet.

As a heads up, at least on the '06-'07 E9x 330i, the oil interval sensor and electronic dipstick stops working at 186k. Curious if that happens to us.

Same. Picked up a Carrera 3.2 earlier this year, 135i has 39k, I barely drive it as I commute by bike during the week.

The 911 will be going to storage in a few weeks for the winter, so I am trying to maximize the time i have left

They are completely intoxicating(3.2 as well), I want nothing more in a car. The size, connection, feel, sound, power, and the rest of it are simply perfect.

And yeah, I've been canning it at every opportunity, while squeaking in some upgrades here and there.

Few shots from when I picked it up. I've done a ton since then and haven't had much time for photos.

Since purchasing:
-Oil Change
-Trans/diff fluid change
-Adjusted all the valves
-New valve cover gaskets
-Deleted half of the AC components
-New spark plugs
-New seatbelts in red
-Momo Protipo wheel
-Headlight relay(takes load off the stalk switch)
-New shifter bushings from the trans to the shift lever
-Adjust shift linkage
-Replaced '75 Turbo tail with a proper 3.2 Carrera tail
-Replaced hood struts
-Replaced the door panels with RS America door panels/pulls
-Rebuilt window regulators
-Installed new vapor barriers in the doors
-Restored the dashboard
-Deleted the radio and associated wiring
-Replaced tail light lenses/gaskets
-Added ram air scoop for the front oil cooler
-Redyed black trim

I have a bunch of other items on hand to keep getting it up to my standards, which I try to do at least one of per week. I'm most looking forward to the custom order set of Recaros that should be coming in the next month or two.

Give me a heads up when you do the doorcards. I ended up using the AppBiz version, and found the straps themselves to not be up to my standards. I made a really nice set from EMS strapping which is much closer to the original straps.

Mine on the left, which is softer, darker, and generally much nicer:
