new to 135, what to look for?

Hi,

I should get my lemans blue with oyster interior 135 m sport DCT (M package, not M car).

What are things I should look for? what hidden menu's does the iDrive have?

Does it have launch control? how do you do it?

What to look out for? is it safe to chip? What company is best or safest?

Thanks and have a good one!!!

I am eager to get my car, I am honestly not the biggest BMW fan, been an Audi/VW driver for a long time. Was looking at the A5, but it is 6k dlls more and only has 211hp, right now I drive a V6 passat, so I didn't want to go to a slower car.

The 1 series was my choice and hopefully I will be really happy, wanted a drivers car that is fast without having to go to a 2seater sports car.

Being that this will be my first BMW, I have no idea what tuners are good and who to avoid. I know Audi has some tuners that are really risky, you chip them and the air to fuel mixture is not right and risk blowing the engine, seen one too.

So just a general outlook on what tuners are good, or trust worthy, how long to wait to chip so if there are any little problems with the car I will have no problem with warranty and stuff.

There are also little things like the hidden menu's that I have no idea how to access.

Just looking to get a welcome to the 135 from enthusiast and not form the dealer!!!

Also, I have seen a ton of topics about the N54 vs N55, but most of it is people cheering for their own engine. Is the N54 really a stronger engine? Dealer says the only change is the single turbo, because there was a milisecond delay between the twin turbo that BMW wanted to eliminate, and the single is better. But you guys know how dealers will always say the new engine is always better.

Looking forward to adding to this website and enjoying my car!!!

The only part of this comment that I can speak to coming is from the POV from an N54 6MT.

The difference in the engines includes many variables, but no matter what anyone here tells you (ex. N54 vs. N55 threads), currently the N54 has more options available as far as tuning goes. Time will tell what the N55 is capable of!!! The N54 has well-documented limitations in tuning capability. So, if I were you, I would go test-drive the two (assuming neither have HPFPs on their way to the other side).

In the end, it is your preference on how much tuning you care to do at the moment. Good luck and have fun with your decision. 1Addicts will always prefer their options/version, but definitely try one with a version of the sports pack with the M-Sport Steering Wheel and Seats, for me they make a world of difference!

TL;DR : test a sports package, you won't regret it; find what suits you best; be careful of the polarization of the forums on this topic, to each their own 1addiction.

You definitely didn't have to explain whats M sport on a BMW Forum

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

I didn't explain what it is, because I don't have MSport, bud. I have the 08 sport package. All I said is that the seats and steering wheel "feel" better as I just had a 328i loaner w/o sports package of any kind. And the thread is titled "What to look for"

You did remind me of this though my CA said the newer cars that have the iPod option do not come with the necessary cable, so try to get your dealer to throw that in. Not sure if that is 100% true, though.

IF you are looking at early 135i's (2008's) make sure yours has the M sport package which also comes with the oil cooler. Early cars did not come with an oil cooler.

I am getting a 2012 135 with the ma package. So I will get the N55 engine no matter what, not looking at buying used. I don't think I will go crazy on the tuning, maybe just a normal chip.

Thanks for the replys.

I have used the search and found some threads about the hidden menus and such that will be usefull once I get the car. Hopefully at the end of the month!!!

Don't really need to change my car, so I was hesitating to just wait for the new 2 series coupe (or new 1 series coupe) but if I just keep waiting for whats next I will never buy a car, there si always something new coming.

I do hope that they don't release the 2 series as a 2013 model as my car will depreciate a lot and would be the old model in a year!!! but I hope the smiles from the first year of driving will make it up.

What milage should I wait to do any tunning, meaning if I have no problems with the DCT or any other small thing I should be safe.

How is the oil cooler and intake intercooler for tuning? would I have to change them after more than 350hp?

Ohh yes, that is right! Sorry. But I think the verts (e88's) did not come with oil coolers at first, I thought the oil cooler was bundled with some sort of M trim on the e82 coupe. ? Maybe my memory is off here. ???

Sounds great man! Enjoy it! There have been a few documented issues with the dct that I have seen popup on the forums so be wary. I would wait at least until the engine breakin is done to mod the car.

So far I have seen the 135i (at least the N54) is plenty capable of being chipped to 350-400 HP. Assuming you mean at the crank and not at the wheels.

I think it may have been the 3 series 35i that was lacking an oil cooler on the 07MY, if memory serves. Not 100% sure on that so don't quote it as true, but I distinctly remember that the 335i 07 model required more than the later models to hold a tune properly and this may have been the cited reason.

Hey Dackel! Are you getting a 1M? Sorry for the

Cheers,

What are the general opinions on safe tuners? I have seen the burger piggy back and ESS. But I have no idea what is safer.

Who to avoid in tuning, and who can be trusted?

Noop. I like my silver w/red coral 135i too much. IF I did not already own a 135i I think I would be driving a 1M though.

Is the 1M worth 10k dlls more than the 135? In Mexico the 135, only one choice with almost all the options is 52k dlls, the 1M is 64k dlls. The 135 is DCT and the 1M is manual.

Is it really worth it to upgrade?

Ich liebe mein Schwartz mit Schwartz
But if I were to be picky and get a new one(I got mine used), BSM mit Rot.

that is the million dollar question for you. It all depends on your tastes and if you can get your hands on one. The debate over what comes with that 10k more has been done to death on these forums.
Best of luck, personally I am fond of the MT but DCT does sound amazing.
