135i won't go into reverse
So I drive a 2011 135i 6MT and while I was at work and I noticed my car wouldn't go into reverse. Side view mirrors go down indicating the ecu thinks I'm in reverse but as I slightly let go of the clutch you can see the shift knob pop out. Tried popping it back in when the shift knob comes out but that resulted in a grind (stupid idea maybe but it was worth a shot). On multiple occasions at different locations tried moving forward in 1st then going to reverse but still nothing. Tried searching everywhere and found a lead on the 3 series forum that it could be linkage or a gear selector shaft (none of which are covered under an extended warranty that's supposed to cover transmission ). So anyone here had any issues with this or could shed some light on the subject. If not I'm left with the option of $175 diagnostic fee and possible part and install which is probably gonna be ridiculous. Or would it be better to go to an outside shop to fix?

Covered under warranty. Took 5 days to replace

Why didn't go into reverse...
Here's my view: reverse is the tightest, ratio wise. Because the cluster is comparatively tight (for lack of better term) to the others rev. will grind if the clutch does not fully dis-engaged, regardless of a depressed pedal. Fluid needs bled (best case) or, progressing...needs slave cylinder or, hard work here...replacing the throw-out bearing, or major clutch components replaced.
My guess: they bled your circuit and all is then well. If you have 100k+ mi. then expect 'clutch stuff' repairs, depending on driving style and conditions of course. |
