Yes, and you don't live in New Mexico where many of the roads are still dirt, my friend. That's why I have the preferences I do.

I had these in 17x9 as my race wheels. Offset at 45mm was a little too much for the E36 but spacers made them work. Very light at 16.7 lbs. in that config.

Dude, I appreciate your input as I've been away since I worked for Santa Monica BMW for 6 years back in the day. Since then, much of my free time has been occupied with racing AMA District 37 Enduro Series (won a class championship in 98') so I'm a little off the pace with regard to the current BMW scene.
I've heard that full polished wheels are going to be the next rage. This wheel polished would, no doubt, knock their eyes out: |

The sunken in center hub of that wheel looks sick. I flip/flop on whether I like the extreme sudden sink in like that, or a nice steady concave slope over the whole wheel. Also, they don't look like too much of a pain to clean!!!

^^ I remember looking at Ruff Racing wheels in the past. they required me to use an adapter to fit their wheels. wasn't fond of that idea.

oops, yeah, you're right about that. The RE-Mg is also forged magnesium made by BBS of Japan and is very light. The wheel you have pictured is a BBS RE705 and is very elusive. Here are some pictures of it mounted:
and these wheels are intended for track only use. They are made specifically for the speed world challenge cars seen here. I did some research and found that they can crack if used on the street where potholes are commonplace. Here's a pic of them on some SWC cars: So the RE705 wheels are the track-oriented wheels made of forged magnesium and the RE-Mg wheel is the street-oriented wheel made of forged magnesium. Both are light, but I'd take my chances with the street version... |

if you want some more information on the wheels, check out this thread on m3forum.com:
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=42809 The guy bought them used from a race shop in Oakland. Normally you can't buy them as a consumer, but only as a racing team so it seems...bummer quoted from the owner of the wheels in that forum (when someone mentioned you could buy them from TC Kline): "PTG Racing bought all their stock" |

that's the aluminum BBS RE. The magnesium version of that wheel is called the RE-Mg and is only available through BBS of Japan and through select importers here. I honestly have no idea where the RE705 (like the one you originally pictured) can be purchased if at all. I think I'd just go for the RE-Mg anyways since its meant for the street and is just as light as the RE705.
I will concede, however, that the RE705 does look better than the RE-Mg, but it doesn't look as though we can have our cake and eat it too. |
