Probably referencing 250kw which is approx. 335.26hp... I remember this number was featured in the BMW manufacturing index list that was discovered which listed all the 1 series models.

Pumping up marketing for a model which doesn't perform in the real world will only get BMW so far anyway (maybe in the form of more initial deposits and orders). If the professional reviews aren't positive once it's test driven by the press and the public, the car will not sell well no matter how much marketing they did prior to release. I'm pretty confident that this fact is not lost upon BMW, which is why I don't think the marketing is simply to cover up an underperforming 1M.
I agree with everything you stated. I tried to come off less accusatory in my original post. All I tried to say is "it (may, can)" be a try to use marketing to generate hype instead of using actual performance. Whether or not that came across I am not sure but I am certainly trying to clarify here.

I am just a little turned off by this new marketing campaign. Am I going to make up my mind before a test drive or before final release? No way. I wish BMW let the paparazzi do all the spyshots and stay focused on preparing a grand splash/official debut on 12/12/10.

Just watched the video, after stating that it has 340 brake horsepower, he states "250 manual, just like the old guys." Strikes me that he's referring to the tranny.

I suspect everything looks small after a Cayenne...

Less is more. IMHO...

My thoughts exactly.

Then they apply the best ones to the M3 and M5 launches..

Another idea is that this is the first 1M launch ever, whereas the M3 and M5 have had several launches. (I understand this applied to the X5/X6 M as well).
I thought nobody else would say it. They MUST hype it as it is the first 1 Series M. There's been tons of the other M cars (except for the M buses but, however good they might be, who really cares about those anyway) before and any new one will simply be a replacement of one that's gone before. This is the debut of the 1 Series M. I just cannot understand why BMW's marketing push on this is perplexing for so many. Sunday (I think) it'll be all over and all those knotted panties will get loose, praise be to God!

No I rather them not showing me anything at all until 12/12 from day one. I am turned off not because I am being denied access to it until release date, but I feel they are not being frank and MAY be resorting to gimmick to sell cars. They are creating buzz or impression and sometime bad publicity is good publicity.

I don't care if they are creating more attention or less. It's not about them winning (advertisement working) or me winning, (kind of childish, do you not think?)

Are you telling that sedona red or (insert color) red 1M under the black tarp that they have been shuttling around for the past 1-2 month is not done? And they are still working on that unit while it's being transported? (I am adding this post-posting) One more point, you believe the only reason they couldn't lift the entire cover off today is because they have to work overtime tonight to add a new roof or update the interior? Really?

Great post that's how I feel. I don't care about ordering or waiting list...show me the price if it suits my needs in terms of price or performance then I'll buy it like we used to buy cars a few years ago.

I think BMW's marketing strategy is working. Everyone including myself are really pissed BMW is dragging this out which is what they want. We could easily forget about it or lose interest but it's actually hyping up the car. As followers of the BMW brand we know how important this car will be and it will be a top contender for one of BMW's best cars. I'm confident it will be a great car. I'm glad to finally hear how much horsepower and transmission this car will be too as I've read so many conflicting opinions from various sources but it's officially 250kw or 340bhp and manual only.

As for the fake vent.... Well at least once this car does come out. Some tuner will bring the true vented fenders out and so making your 1M stand out from the rest.

Why does everyone keep calling it a "fake" vent? It's a crease in the sheet metal intended to accentuate the flared fender. It's a styling cue that is not trying to imitate a vent at all.

I hypothesize it's because Segler promised us a M-pure car that will give us goose pimples, signifies an ultimate driving machine with little comprise. And coincidentally there was a cut out in the cover where typical M side vent resides, so everyone has been expecting a vent or slit of the sort under it.

This is an example where realty does not meet up with expectation spawn from vague hints. Ultimately I don't think it matters, I believe the performance will live up to the hype. Still, quite questionable to have a design cue so similar to a wheel arc vent but not really one. (If you want a side vent, step up and upgrade to a M3 in the future.

Analogy will be expecting autobots from transformers all year. Parents leaves catalogue of Toy-R-Us open at page of Transformers. Comes Xmas day you found out you got Go-bots Only if you improve your grades next year you will get real Transformers.

IMO, he tells three unrelated facts on the car: 340hp - 250kph - manual.

Could be wrong, though.

The A-pillar is already recessed from the fender.
