"Sputter" then SES light

I was driving through Atlanta yesterday and all of the sudden the car "sputters" or to better describe it, produces a faint hiccup and the Service engine soon (Yellow not red) light pops up. There is no decrease in performance and the car seems to run fine but does have a slightly higher idle. I don't have any performance mods installed currently and I always fill up with BP 93 so I don't think its a gas issue. Anyone have a similar issue before I pay to have the code read?

So, since I've had time to dig at this issue now, I ended up buying the torque app for my android smart phone and a bluetooth OBDII reader. The app says the code is "p0015 powertrain "b" camshaft position- timing over-retarded (bank 1)" after researching a little bit, it seems the Exhaust cam sensor may be bad or the VANOS sensor in other words... Has anyone had this problem before????? I really don't like taking my car to BMW because they charge $100+ just to check codes.

I was just wondering if you had the issue resolved? If so, what did you do?

The same happened to me except I get a minor ticking sound from the engine at lower rpm.

The Vanos sensors can and do go bad. Many have replaced them before. I would replace both sides(intake and exhaust). The sensors are under $100 each.

It was a faulty exhaust camshaft position sensor. My engine wasn't making a ticking sound at idle though, nor was the power diminished. I also replaced the Vanos sensors while I was at it as these sensors tend to go bad in all BMW's as Dack mentioned above. here's the link to the camshaft position sensor. The exhaust and intake are both the same.

I've got a similar problem right now except my car won't even start. Where can you find the camshaft position sensors on our engines?
