Gauge pod mock up opinions
I just ordered a scangauge 2 and while I'm waiting for it to come in I figured I would start doing mock ups to figure out a tasteful way of mounting it. After a trashcan full of cardboard I think I have come up with what might look good and still provide an unobstructed view. Obviously the back will be fully enclosed and I figure I can carve a complete mock up out of wood and then use that as a mold for ABS. Then I'll have my upholsterer cover the ABS with a vinyl that matches the dash. Anyway, thoughts on the placement and shape would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Will it fit the gap between the air vent & the CD player? Do you use the CD player? I put a mount in my CD for my iPhone. Puts it where I need it but makes a bit hard to see the radio but that's a minor annoyance.

No Sir, it's too big for that. The only option I have in that arena is the blank plate below the head unit where the heated seats buttons would normally be. The problem with that location I think would be ease of viewing. But it's an option that may still be on the table. Thanks.

Were that I was as ambitious. I have my Scangauge II mounted in the same place with a piece of Velcro. Cable runs behind gauge nacelle, down under weatherstrip to OBD II port.
Anxious to see how yours comes out. May have to ask you to make a couple of those. |

Would you mind posting a pic? I don't see why I couldn't make a couple more when mine is done. The mold is the hardest part. The most expensive thing will be the upholstery. Plastic is cheap. If I were to recreate it you'll be first on the list since it was you're idea.

That will look good if your mold turns out sharp. Very interested to see how it goes.

I would love/appreciate a detailed build thread. I'd like to display some safety parameters without having to bolt an ugly phone or access port to my dash.

Detailed might be a stretch, I don't think anybody wants to watch me sanding my wood. Once I have the first piece sorted I'll start from there. I concur with your assessment of a phone used for gauges.

I mount GPSs on brackets that screw on under the hood over the existing gauges. The current gauge cluster comes out with two screws at the top and then you can pull the hood. That might put your new scan gauge too close to the existing cluster, you'll have to decide.
I decided I like my Garmin on the left. I wrote a little DIY in that section about my garmins, it has some pictures. They don't have a cover over the back but might give you some ideas for a bracket.
