I finally used the cupholders.
After five months of owning the E90 I finally used the cupholders. I usualy don't drink in the car. I've been reluctant to use the cupholders because they look cheap. Today I bought a Latte in the car and I have to admit I was impressed to how good the cupholders were. They look useless but they are they are pretty good. Anybody who lives in Montreal or has been in Montreal in the spring knows about all the potholes we have on our roads and I have to admit the cupholders held the Latte in place without spilling anything.

There a couple of things i don't like about them though. One, if you put a bottle of water in one, and you take a turn fast, the bottle of water tips over. I'm sure if I took a turn fast enough, the bottle would probably fly out. Second, the passenger side one comes straight out and hits my passenger's knees if they are tall. Three, condensation from a cold cup of X will drip on you if you're using the passenger side, or on your shifter or your passenger for the "driver" cupholder. I think there's a thread somewhere here that gripes about this.

Anything beyound a small cup doesn't fit well. I use it everyday, normal fast food places' "regular cup" size will tip over when you accelerate fast, this happened more than once. Anything larger than a regular size will barely fit in there. Anyone taller than 5'6 will hit their knees on it unless the chair is moved way back. My friend already broke off the passenger side one with his knee and I had to repair it. It's not the best design, but I have found that most cars doesn't have good cup holders anyway. My last car's cup holder was between the arm-rest and shifter, so if I have a cup there, I have to shift the gear very awkwardly. My friend's civic cupholder is so shallow that everything tips over. My aunt's camry cupholder location is right in front of the shifter that you cannot put the car in park if you have a cup there. The only vehicle that I can remember with good cup holders is my dad's business van, a Kia Sonanta. That van has like 20 different cup holders, and that's just the driver's side!

Put the bottle water in the compartment on the side of your door, it's perfect for it. If too noisy, put a lil padding in there to kill the vibration. I don't know if anyone else does, but I always drink Arrowhead bottle water. I find that if I already broken the seal of the cap and have it in the cup holder, the little plastic ring around the neck of the bottle rattles real loud, so I don't like to put it there. I sometimes extend the passenger side chair thigh support out and put the bottle in that little groove, haha.

There was an article about this somewhere. The magazine interviewed some person at BMW and they mentioned that it's very hard to design in cupholders becuase in the EU market they don't like cupholders in the car since you should be driving and not drinking, whereas the NA folks complain that there are no cupholders. BMW has to try and fit them in somewhere and most of the times it's in places that aren't the best
I guess stuck between a rock and a hard place huh |

repost, but I'll say it again...those are NOT cupholders; they're handles for front passenger when going @ high speeds

Works great with Poland Spring Water bottles and Starbucks coffee that I sometimes drink at my car. It's a lot better than my X5's cupholder so I can't complain.

The best cupholders I've come across were in the first generation Mercedes ML. Perfect location, simple design, and they held things where they were supposed to be. What more can you ask for?

I've had to switch to beer in cans. The bottles tend to spill and then I have to wipe everything down.

At least there is one good thing about the E46, drinking and driving is less obvious...

Never used the cup holdrs. I have played with them a few times but not held anything in them. If it is optional on my next BMW, I would not order them.

Cupholders? German cars shouldn't have cupholders. As George Carlin says, "get a f*&#@ng drink before you leave the house!!"
