First start refers to the first few seconds prior to the engine being fully lubricated. It doesn't take 30 seconds for that to occur, but there's no harm in waiting.

warming down the car

Hi,
I have always followed advice to let turbo engined car idle before turning off after long drive. (Not sure where advice came from). Note your recommendation for gentle driving, but say if you come straight off a motorway to a service station and can't do that, is there guidance on how long you should let the car idle?
Indeed is it that much of an issue on a modern engine....as I sit there, wishing I just get out?

On M-Power.com there is an interview with Juergen Schwenker, an M engineer, about the 1M. One of the questions concerns running the turbos at different temperature. Even though the pump circulating water around the turbos can continue to run after the car is switched off, it's not a bad idea to let the car idle for a few minutes before switching off , especially after a hard run.

"Are there rules for running the turbo when cold, or is this an "urban legend”?
This is no urban legend - the turbocharger comes under high thermal stress and can become red-hot when running under maximum load. The charger is lubricated and cooled by means of the engine oil. Cooling is also achieved by means of the cooling water, so that the pump for this is allowed to continue to run as necessary. Nonetheless, the oil can tend to coke in the bearings if the engine is switched off under extreme conditions. The problem described can occur after maximum stresses, as on the racetrack for example. There is no doubt that, after a longer period of use at full throttle, it would do no harm to allow the car a chance to cool down under normal conditions. The instructions in the operating manual should be observed."

I had to add a litre of oil to my car a while back. Was watching the electronic oil gauge, then it finally required a top up. While I was doing that, I noticed some light brown "gunk" around the oil filler cap. I happened to be talking to the service manager, and mentioned it to him. He told me that in our climate, (southern Saskatchewan, think Minnesota winter), it is a good idea to let the car warm up for a few minutes before driving off. Also said very common with cars they see in the shop. Something to think about. Before, I did the same as everyone else, and what manual says. In summer, start and drive, slowly at first. If colder, let warm up for a bit then set off gently.

I typically let the rpm's drop after a cold start, and I can't (shouldn't) drive faster than 30mph while coming out of my neighborhood...so this ~1 slow mile helps warm up the car before I start driving.

As I understand it, operating oil temp refers to the moment the needle moves from its resting position, no need to wait until it approaches 250. I typically let it get to about 1/4 of the way before I rev the engine high.

I always wait around 30 seconds. When cold, oil moves slower and takes a few seconds to get all the way to the top of the engine to protect all moving parts.

Pretty much common sense that the oil is all in the oil pan when stopped and needs to flow through out the engine to protect. It is also true that most engine wear is done at start up.

Buy and install an SSD in your computer and you can start working right away

when its cold, i let it warm up until my seats are hot and the vents blow warm. thats for me though.

in regular (no frost on the windows) weather, i just let the idle drop.

I always wait at least 5 seconds before popping into reverse to bump it into reverse to back out of the garage, then baby it the first 2 miles or so, then just light driving till the JB4 flashes my hazards and tells me its up to 180, then it's normal spirited driving time.

You really should read up on multi grade synthetic motor oils.

I worked with Oils in the Oil business for years and understand the Viscosity Index and oils testing very well. Even Synthetic multi grade oil's pour slower when cold. Simple test to do if you live somewhere cold.

With my car having Akrapovic downpipes, and tune, my car really doesn't even rev high for more then a few seconds because there are no cats to warm up, so I just get going pretty quick after, and just go easy until everything gets to temp, which I find to take a while, I normally get to work and the oil temp needle has not even moved, id like to hook up a computer to get more accurate readings, but ill save that for another time.

Ahh was just asking you about oil usage, as BMW told me it was normal, but it seemed odd to me, about a quart every month or two. Only had 2oz in my OCC when i emptied it two weeks ago. I'll probably start changing my oil more often as soon as my maintenance runs out though, i was just taking advantage of the free oil changes while it lasted.

I burned a quart before my first oil change and burned a half of a quart before the injectors went.
