Funny, your experience reminds me the opposite of the one I had with a 2005 120d (for the records I was living in Belgium then). I had the 120d on my shopping list as a company car and really did not like it during the test drive, I was finding it gutless and hated the shifter. One of my colleague bought one at that time and I had many chances to drive it and always found it awesome, really far from my test drive experience. I think it depends a lot on the mileage, I found that my 128i did change very quickly with the miles, it sorts of unleashes itself. Maybe you would like to test another one or take your chance, I don't think you would be disappointed.

Done it. Drove a 135i DCT and a 135is manual.
Verdict: Pretty much the same. Details:
Somebody mentioned software update earlier in the thread, so I found this: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=638072. It seems to describe exactly what I'm driving at, even though the consensus of the thread was that the PPK would solve the issue. The 135is has the PPK, but I don't feel like it "solves" the "problem". I put problem in quotes because this is obviously an artificial problem - it all comes down to engine programming. Nonetheless, still frustrated - I feel as if BMW has "neutered" an otherwise hidden gem of a performance coupe and am kicking myself for not having picked one up a year and half ago. Next step: try to find a '11 without the SW update and drive it to confirm that I'm not absolutely bonkers. |

I don't know. I have a hard time believing BMW neutered a car and you're the only one to notice.
In any event, I don't find the 135is ride on the runflats compliant at all (to the point where I'd like to get rid of them), and I don't find the PE subdued at all either. Maybe my tastes are a little different, which is really what I think is being discussed in this thread.

Perhaps the car(s) you drove were not warmed up? If you just drove them several blocks (typical test drive), they may not have been at operating temps, and the cold limiters might have prevented full operation?

I have subsequently found out from a source in BMW Munich, that the "neutering" is to preserve the transmission & reduce warranty claims. N54 all the way now

We used to talk about this all the time in the 3 series forum, but I think the car adapts to your driving. There are ways of resetting the adaption.
I do know that after track days my car was quicker on the throttle and the shift points had changed. After a few days of commuting it seemed to go back to dull mode. |

I used to have my adaptations reset in my E46 after major service. It always felt more responsive after, but could have been placebo.

See if you can test drive one with a Dinan 2 tune. My uncle got it done on his '12 135i DCT and holy sh*t. That car is even more bonkers.
