My car forgot its comfort access
So I have comfort access, and recently when the car was in the body shop the guys did not shut it off properly and drained the battery. When I got the car back it is like it totally forgot comfort access, I cannot touch the handles to open and key must be in the ignition to start it. I replaced the battery in the fob and same result afterwards.
Is there a trick to getting this to reset or must I go to BMW? Trying to avoid a whole demod right now.

My CA is working intermitently from my drivers side only. I can still CA into the trunk and passenger side, but my drivers side works sometimes and not others.

I don't know exactly how comfort access is implemented but I believe it is through the same instructions you change while coding. I know I got my top to go down with the key fob through coding and this is normally a comfort access feature. Anyway, if my assumption is correct, and you have a pre-body shop version of your file, you can restore to that. If you do not have the file, then I don't see an alternative to a trip to the dealer.

I stopped by my local BMW dealership and told them about the same issue. I mentioned that I used to be able to start me car with my fob in my pocket. Now I must have it in the ignition.
They "Analyzed" the issue and said their was a sensor behind the ignition Fob insert that reads the proximity of the Fob. They said I would have to replace it for it to work. Its about 700USD. With my extended warranty I would pay about 300USD. Can anybody get their hands on a schematic of the dash to verify this part and possibly the part number? |

I brought mine in for an oil change and had them take a look at it. They ordered a new door handle and hope that it will remedy the issue. Outside of that, they would have to do more digging. I can still easily access the trunk and passenger side but cant get CA to work on the drivers side at all anymore.
Ill update if i find out anything.

First thing I would check is the fuse... I changed mine from 15A to 20A and this intermittent issue went away.
Apparently the 15A fuse (which comes stock) sometimes can't handle the pressure. Change it to a 20A fuse and see if it works. As per, http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=439456 |

Bmw recognizes 10 keys for the vehicle with only 2 for CAS.
alot of time the battery located in the back of the key dies out, easy fix. if the vehicle did "forget" the programming for the vehicle you can access it in ISTA and change the key numbers and profile number to "key 1" or "key 2" and it should all work again, also keep in mind your not suppose to "jump start" bmw's alot of things can go wrong.

Make a new claim with your insurance company. Tell them what you said... that it worked before going into the body shop. Sometimes when body shops weld on a car... they don't disconnect the car's battery... and the voltage spikes can kill some ECMs in the car.
IF it is the sensor behind the ignition Fob insert - why are the door handles not working when you touch them? Sounds like your dealer just gave you a "guesstimate" on what's wrong. ? Your insurance company should take car of this for you. Dackel PS: Have you tried replacing the key fob battery ?

It is possible to set your car up to unlock everything, including the trunk, when you unlock it. That is how mine is set. I do not have comfort access. So I don't know if it would unlock the trunk when you touch a door handle but it seems worth a try. You can set it through the buttons on the turn signal.
