Wheel Hop in a 1M
I don't have a 1M but I'm running the full M3 rear end axle so I figured I would post here. I have 265s on the rear, so the same tyre width but probably not running quite the same track width but it would be closeish.
Do any of you guys suffer from absolutely horrible wheel hop on launch? And if so, what have you done to try and fix it? I went to the drags 2 nights ago and was dealing with the worst wheel hop. I even wheel hopped in the wet box trying to do a burnout when dumping my twin plate clutch at 6k RPM... Just a bit of info about the car. It's an N54 135i with RBs that is making twice stock power. It has a PTF twin plate clutch with SMFW. I have Turner solid aluminium rear subframe bushings.

I haven't gone to drags, but I launch pretty aggressively at autocross, usually with moderate initial wheelspin, and have NEVER experienced wheel hop in this car.
What are you using for shocks in the rear? If you have already tightened up the subframe, you may need more dampening. Poly bushings may also help, but will drastically increase NVH. |

Thanks for the replies.
I have Moton Clubsport shocks. They're double adjustable for both compression and rebound. 7 clicks for both. To be honest I started on the lowest compression and rebound setting but I have played with increasing it before and also on the night and it didn't seem to make any difference. I didn't go up to the full 7 though. At most I went up to 5 compression and 3 rebound. What would you guys recommend for settings?

If it were me, I would go 7/7 and see if the problem goes away. If not, you can't solve it with your shocks. If it does, you can start dialing it back to find the sweet spot. A lower compression setting will allow the suspension to load and increase grip, but obviously any wheel hop will throw that grip out the window.

Hmmm thanks, I will give it a go. It's funny though that even dumping the clutch at 6k RPM I get wheel hop on a wet surface. Almost like I have too much grip.
Now just to get my alignment fixed. Hopefully it's just the adjustable alignment being thrown out of whack rather than something being broken...

What tyre pressure were you running froop? Every time I went to WSID I struggled with axle tramp in my old car. By adjusting my tyre pressures to 18-20psi that helped drastically!

Hmmm fair point, I was running Ku36 so my sidewalls would not have been as hard as yours. You may have to look into street tyres or borrow some drag radials preferably

Are the Moton remote resevoir? Have the resevoirs even been disconnected? What pressure was the nitrogen set to? They usually require around 600 PSI or so, not easy to do.

Yeap, they're the remote reservoir ones for rebound. Compression is on the shock itself. I believe they were disconnected during the install but they've been working perfectly fine when I adjust them on the track and street. Maybe I'll find someone to test it anyway.

The thing is though, is that these shocks were installed almost 18 months ago and I haven't had any wheelhop issues at all until the last month or two. But it's definitely still worth getting checked out. I'll have to make some calls around to see who in Sydney can service gas shocks.
