Engine speed != MPH

IOW, you change gears every so often. You can do 4th 5th & 6th at highway speeds without going over 5.5k RPM (BMW recc'd max RPM for breakin)

I pick up my car on a Friday and when I get home Sunday I'll have 1350 miles on her.

I about the same trip when I picked up my Mcoupe. What I did to vary the rpms is shift between 4th,5th and 6th gear every 30 minutes while keeping about the same speed. Meaning 4th gear 30 minutes, 5th gear 30 min, etc.

Not the ideal breakin procedure but fine for our purposes.

November 2 PCD - Anyone else?

I'm picking up my black 1M on 11/2 - anyone else that day?

I had the impression BMW gave you a 'similar' car but that you did not drive your brand-new, near-zero miles car on the track. Some of the notes appear to say you get to drive your own car (the 1M) - can someone clear this up for me?

I'll be driving from the PCD back to Dallas. Any suggestions on good roads/drives along the way? I plan to do about half on interstate. Thanks.

Yes, shifting gears while maintaining the same speed was the first thing I thought of, although I was thinking more like 10 min intervals.
If you imagine a graph with RPM on the Y-axis and time on the X-asis, you'd get something like a staircase chart.
I thought they wanted me to do a sinusoidal wave... or something more random.

Its really not -that- big a deal.

Just drive the car and don't go over 5500 rpms and you'll be fine. You want to keep it under 5500 rpms in the beginning as the rings are micro welding the cylinder walls and you want a good consistent seal. Also you have things like cams and bearings which are getting broken in, but they are of secondary concern. Another trick you can do is compression braking. Run the car to 5500 rpms then foot off the gas and let the car reduce speed though compression braking. This is really good for getting a nice tight leak free ring seal. You can do this multiple times in the beginning.

In reality machining tolerances are so tight now and the honing patterns are so much smoother than they used to be that after the first 100 miles or so the rings and cylinder walls are pretty well done getting to know each other.

After that you don't want to rev into the stratosphere though because you've got tons of crap floating around in the oil from all the engine bits smoothing off the rough edges.

Don't be over concerned with all of this. By the mere fact you’re even asking the question puts you leaps and bounds above 99% of all other drivers on the road.

Well... that was my thought as well with this current 3-series.
I didn't abuse it, but I just drove it normally. No big deal, I thought.
Now, 11 years later, it's burning oil at a rate of 1 quart per 500 miles.
I just wanted to try something different... anyone has more wisdom pearls?

BTW, if I recall what I read correctly, it's 4500 rpm. 5500 sounds too high.

Friends,

Our delivery is on Friday, and we need to be back home by Sunday.
We plan to use Blue Ridge Parkway. Given the delivery will be in the afternoon, we would not be able to cover a lot of miles on that day and enjoy the views.

Is there a recommended hotel on/near parkway to stay one night?

BAD NEWS on floormats

Originally US cars didn't come with floor mats from the factory. That being the case all PCD cars have to be delivered with floor mats so the originating dealership was charged for the signature 1m orange threaded mats.

As of October sometime there's been a change on the floor mats. Now all US bound 1ms come with the generic black floor mats in the trunk from the factory. So now PCD cars do NOT get the signature 1m orange thread mats. They just take the generic ones out of the trunk and place them in the vehicle

This is straight from Ginger at PCD.

Who pays the damage: BMW insurance or driver insurance?

Nope, they shouldn't drill into your front plate unless you tell them to. I made sure to tell them NOT to, just in case. Also tell your CA ahead of time, my guy made some sort of note (or maybe he was just blowing smoke).

Does anyone know if the center still has orange stitched 1M mats?

I've not been able to get a good answer via email and it's a bit difficult to get someone on the phone there.

I've told my CA to put in the request, but he seems to think that the PC is out of the 1M mats. I can't find them on BMW website either.

Basically, PCD does not supply the 1M mats. To get them, your CA has to either send them to PCD for your pickup. OR, your CA can send them to your home (or you pick them up from your dealer). I think they are currently on backorder.


I didnt get ANY mats during ED. Then, I didnt get ANY mats during PCD. Even after repeated requests.

My CA is an asshat dumbass, its not PCD's fault.


PCD was AWESOME otherwise. ALthough Im still waiting for 1200mile service records from VPC to confrm correct fluids. Waiting.......still waiting...... Again, not PCD's fault, they dont do the 1200 mile service. Oh, did I mention Im still waiting for my 1200mile service records? Anyone? Bueller?

edit: I have two emails from PCD saying as much, so I wouldnt "bark up the PCD tree". Hassle (ahem, ask) your CA for them. Its the best use of your time.
