2008 128i - wrong oil?

Hi all,

I just bought a 2008 128i Convertible a few days ago. The oil light came on so I checked the level and it says it needs some added. The people that owned it before me always had the service performed at a BMW dealer until the last service as there is no BWM where they just moved to.

I checked the oil change sticker and it says they used Valvoline 5w-30 MST Euro last. It was one of those quick-service places and it was only 10 days ago so I'm wondering should I just top it up with Castrol Edge 0w-40, or top it up with 5w-30 MST Euro and do an oil change as soon as I can?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Aaran

It's fine. Just change it regularly with a quality oil and filter. Do not go by the oil monitor - the intervals are far too long unless you confirm with UOA regularly. Every 5-7.5k miles is good.

Did "oil light come on" or did BC show low level?
Probably wait a day or two and re-check oil level with engine hot. If you don't know how, read your owners manual. If you really need to top up, buy a litre of 0W 40.
For future oil changes, learn to do it yourself [DIY] or find a good garage. If DIY, confirm your local Walmart carries Castrol 0W-40. Change oil twice a year, April & October (unless you winter store-then only October). If you DIY, try and measure how much oil comes out.
Again, if DIY, buy 6 or more Mann oil filters.

Castrol 0-40 European does not carry the BMW LL-01 rating any more. Neither does Mobil 1 0-40w. Both used to. The prevailing opinion seems to be that the two oil manufacturers were not willing to pay to have their oil certified to a now out-dated spec. But if you want to use BMW approved oil, you need to review the current list or just get a quart from a dealer. I think Castrol's 5-30W full synthetic still has the LL-01 rating.

I switch from Mobil 1 to Castrol but I am not just sticking with the Castrol 0-40W.

The Mann filter you want is 816X (working from memory, it's worth double checking this).
