My Car Is Finally On The Way

I had originally ordered the car with the intent of starting a road trip vacation on Sept. 25th from the west coast back to FL. However, the car wasn't going to be ready in time, so I chose to push my vacation back to Oct. 23rd instead of taking one that the dealership traded for that was similar. My car is built and currently under way on the Don Carlos [which is scheduled to be at the port in CA on Oct. 6], so it should have no problem getting to the dealership by my pick up date. And the delay gives me another month to put away some more green for the trip, though it also means lower temperatures and fewer daylight hours.

The Car:
Crimson Red / Black Leather / Glacier Silver Aluminum
6MT
M Sport
Value Pkg
Harman Kardon
Satellite Radio
Alarm

The Trip:
Redwood Forest
San Francisco
Napa Valley
Pacific Coast Highway
Hearst Castle
Sequoia National Forest
Death Valley
Las Vegas
The Grand Canyon
The Petrified Forest
San Antonio / The Alamo

Sounds like a nice break-in trip!

Did you purposely order the car on the west coast to make that road trip back?

Yes. I got the idea from the European Delivery program. I wanted to do that, but since I don't have anyone to go with right now, I decided to put that off until next time.

Sounds like a nice trip! In Napa, don't miss highways 121 and 128! Both are lots of fun!

Sounds like a nice trip and a nice car! My 135i is on the don carlos as well.

edit: How are you planning on driving the car back? AFAIK you have to pay CA sales tax and reg unless the dealer sends the car to FL on a truck (I work at a CA dealer)

Thanks, but I won't be driving in Napa . . . I'll be drinking in Napa. I'll be doing one of the bus tours and the 1 will have the day off.

I'm driving it back to FL myself and I'm getting around CA sales tax by buying in Oregon. I'm guessing my little car sale isn't the only commerce that CA misses out on by having ridiculously high taxes.

Won't you have to pay the tax when you register the vehicle in FL?

Garage List
2021 BMW M2  [0.00]
When I purchased my car in Albany county NY, and lived in Rensselaer county NY I got stuck paying the tax for Rensselaer county.

my dad purchased his last car in NJ, but since it was being registered in NY, he paid NY tax on it instead of NJ.

You should have to pay FL tax and not Oregon (lack of) tax.

That's what they're telling me, though I have no idea why FL has the right to tax me on a transaction that isn't taking place in FL.

The answer is pretty simple you are licensing your car in Florida. They collect the sales tax and any other licensing fees.

The licensing fees I understand, it's the sales tax I don't get. Why does FL have the right to collect sales tax on a car I didn't buy in FL?

It's just a way to keep people from bypassing their own state's taxes. Do you know how many people would be flocking to other states to buy their cars if it was allowed....the dealerships would go broke.

I understand why they do it, I just don't understand how it's legal. How are they getting around that pesky U.S. Constitution and taxing a transaction that didn't take place within the state?

But anyway, the Don Carlos is through the Panama Canal, so my car has made it to the Pacific Ocean. And with Friday being Oct. 1, it will finally be the month I take delivery . . . after ordering in early July. I'm starting to get a little excited that my car and my trip are getting closer.
