Think this only came on some of the non- U.S. model cars. Seem to remember comments about them from Australia/ South Africa. Looks like something that would be nice to have. Cooling function as well as quicker oil warmup due to coolant hookup. Looked at it briefly but it involves some new parts, oil filter housing, the exchanger and plumbing into the cooling system so didn't feel it was worth the expense for our climate. A little info. on it on pg. 119-29 of Bentley's E90 Service manual.

Only present on the N52's fitted to heavier cars (in the US, that is) such as the X3, X5, and (I think) the 5-series. I retrofitted one onto my car...

I'm actually replacing the heat exchanger on my 135i E82 2008 at the moment since I found a little oil in my coolant reservoir.

I recently installed one on my car as well. The housing I picked up on eBay for cheap originally came off of an x5 I believe.

This thread has a bit more information about it: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1412435

The installation process isn't the worst, but some of the bolts are pretty miserable to get to.
