I finally was able to bring this to the dealership and they could reproduce the problem. Mine shuts off and the display says, "HI-TEMP."
I lose all radio functionality until the unit cools down. This stupid radio doesn't like hot or cold. But finally they confirmed a problem and they have ordered a replacement radio. Will keep you posted on the diagnosis and outcome.

Regarding the recode - Dealer thinks it might be because my car is 'so old' - it's a 2009 and there apparently has been a series of recent radios that are not the same somehow and every now and then they get one. He said 'it happens'...

Sometimes you can't - here on the east coast it will crop up a thunderstorm with seconds - well, OK, minutes notice... can't always get there.

Had mine replaced last week due to this issue. It had been a problem for over a year, and it progressed from the bad display, to not remembering the station it was last tuned to, to occasionally not powering up until a few minutes after starting the car. Dealer took care of it without question, at my final service visit before the warranty expires.

I had the same problem. Took my car to a dealership and they claimed it's functioning properly. Took my car to another dealership and they replaced the radio head unit, no questions asked. They did have coding problems according to the paper work they gave me, but that's none of my business. The bottom line is they replaced it for me.
What's polarized radio? |

If u use some brands of polarized sunglasses u cannot see the radio screen due to the orientation of the screen vs the sunglasses. If u rotate your glasses u can then see the screen. Kind of annoying in the summer. There is a post to fix if u do a search. Good luck.

Whoa, back from the dead. Had this replaced at the dealer without any problem. The service manager said he has seen it quite a bit before. The best part? New radio has some extra sound settings (Did the premium radio in '08 have EQ?) and HD radio.
As for the service engine light, they found one of the fuel injectors was misfiring and ended up replacing 4 of the 6. I guess procedure is to replace all injectors on the same bank and any others with the same serial number. |

Ouch. Hope you all got this fixed under warranty. Looks pretty annoying to read.

Well I haven't played with the EQ settings which I assume will improve the sound over the stock unit, but if you listen to the radio, the HD stations are MUCH better than the standard stations and sound really good with our stereo.

Had my car in for service and asked about the display dimming, BMWNA said they will not replace it becuase it's a temporary issue that only happens when extremely warm and resolves itself after the cabin cools.
So you guys that got new radios out of this are the lucky ones it looks like. |

Mine is in the shop now getting a new ac evaporator and this same thing happens to the radio when it gets hot but when it cools down it returns to normal. I'll probably tell them to fix that too.

Radio issue
I purchased '08, 328 coupe CPO in January and I started noticing the radio screen loosing pixels moment the heat started.
Of course, reg warranty expired in march and I do have CPO warranty but it does not cover the radio. Anyway, I came to idea to make a cover for the radio, made from styrofoam and cover it with some type of heat resistant material or perhaps leather. Hopefully this will keep front radio panel from the heat and if made to look good, and works, who cares! I'll keep you guys posted |

I had this German company(http://www.tachopix.de/) repair my dead pixels on my speedo kombi(instrument) gauges on my e39. One day turn around, my car was down three days. Not bad.
I think they can also repair bmw radios as well.
