OK,
God how sad, my parents keep telling me and my brothers how its pretty much impossible to own a house in san diego.. back in their day, property was still cheap. My brother lives in a duplex that my parents own , and the 1 right next door to them (which needs MAJOR remolding) sold for $600K, and its NASTY.

Hoboken is crazy and the parking is even worse (I'm sure you'd be parking in a garage though, which would add another $200-300 monthly)

Property taxes in NJ are #1 (Bergen County especially). Apartments anywhere NEAR NYC are INSANELY priced. Also unlike CA we can build up so we have A LOT of apartments at a very HIGH rent rate each.
