I'm quite sure that the next M3 will not have a V6.

It is confirmed the M3 will NOT have a V6. It was conjectured up by a few websites to stir controversy. The motor being developed is a turbo charged inline 6 if I'm not mistaken. No worries.

Hmmm. Am I the only one not pumped up about the future M3 and M version of the 1er. I mean a 3 liter turbo charged inline 6 cyclinder 3 series sounds great...it's called a 335i. Tune it and you have some serious turbo charged power. A two liter turbo charged four cylinder sounds okay, but this is going to be slower than the current 135i. I know that M is more than just all out speed, but still.

///M is all about High revs with low torque numbers. Sorry but I dont want a 4 banger in there especially a turbo one. Been there done that. Im getting an E90-E92 M3 and keeping it. Thinking about it Id rather have a lotus at least its N/A even tho its a 4 banger After 6 years of F/I I want to go back to N/A I miss reving(been reving my bikes in the meantime but still). 8400 rpm ITB's v8 or even the old s54 cant be defeated.

I am with juicer. I do not think BMW will put a 4 cylinder in the M1. They always go for a huge HP increase. Look at the e46 M3 vrs e90 M3. There is an 80 HP increase in the e90 M3.

times have changed..
Emissions are stricter and fuel economy matters these days..
Next M3 will NOT have 500hp .. It will be much torquer than current engine and much more fuel efficient.. Bet on that... Probably same numbers, maybe slightly faster and agile due to weight loss and torque..

For all of the speculation I would say the only certainty is that the performance of the M3 and 5 will have to be in line with the performance of its rivals. If Audi, Lexus and Mercedes are all selling cars that keep raising the bar, it would be suicide for BMW to walk away and say, "well we'd rather be slower, but more economical". If BMW can engineer category leading performance with smaller engines, then kudos to them. The bottom line (literally) is that these cars must be competitive.

I seriously doubt we will see an 'M1' due to the current world economic conditions and based on the BMW's recent annoucement that there will not be an 'M' version of the new Z4.

They should put in a diesel

Plenty of torque then...

I do not think fuel economy is on the mind of the people that buy M cars, thatís why you pay a gas guzzler tax when you buy the M cars. BMW are using VANOS, Direct, and other goodies to meet increased emission standard. If fact I would bet BMW is way ahead of most auto manufactures in the emission department.

Cars are heavier these days for safety reasons so if they make the 1 series lighter to use a lighter 4 cylinder engine they are sacrificing safety.

For the record, BMW said the same thing about the E85 Z4...and my dad has an '07 M Coupe in the garage. I wouldn't put much stock in what they say now....

There will not be an M1. There is too much heritage there with that name. There will be an M-Sport or some other derivation of an "M" version of the current 1 series, but without calling it an M1.

There are a plethora of cars that fall below 3000lb that are very safe. The very sold MINI Cooper comes to mind. Civics, Corollas, Miata, etc.

Cars are heavier these days because we put more and more luxury and technology in the car. A lighter engine alone will not impair safety. If you are talking about talking about taking elements of active safety such as abs or traction control (which generally adds weight) out then that would be different.

Passive safety is all about crumble zones and safety cells. All these does not have to do with weight but distribution of forces and rigidity respectively. Things such as side impact beams etc doesn't have to be removed to remained strong - they just need lighter materials.

What I am saying is that making a lighter doesn't mean it will make it less safe.

A lighter engine will generally be safer as it will have less impact on the compartment if a crash do happen.

If a M is ever going to happen, it will certainly have either the tti or 1 coupe M as they will never use M1 as that's reserved.

I would agree the next M cars would have to have better performance than the current car it replaces, but it will certainly have a different solution. Most likely with lighter materials, may be a similar output to the current models, but definitely a higher power/weight ratio.

M has always been about performance (what tracks better), and not necessarily about high reving. Although the recent cars might have gone that way.
