Before I decided to go a different direction, I was looking for M2s and lots are listed at $39-42k. Especially if you want alpine white or blue. Mineral Grey seems to be more expensive.

Agreed!

Definitely the high production numbers don't help either.

Pretty soon you should be able to pick one up in the mid to high 30's and then that may be an attractive price for DD 😁

I dunno. I was expecting it to be 135is+ but felt it was more like a fast 320i. Steering is light and numb and really didn’t feel faster. It was a little smoother on the road and more confidence inspiring on a curve but didn’t make me say, yeah I have to have it. That’s the real reason I think they made the M2C. I think that’s the real M2 and BMW knew they’d be able to sell a watered down M2 because “badging”. I don’t think it’s really any better than an M240i, but the bodywork definitely looks nicer. It is a beautiful car.

I've been following the prices and most with under 10K miles list for $45K-$47K. A 2017 with 3K miles went for $46.5K last week.

This is a phenomenal price, and if not an outlier, bad for sellers/good for buyers.

That's called depreciation, Just like any other used car. M2 nothing special anymore.

I still think the M2 will have its day later in the future. Cars are going to pot, automated, more fluff-laden, auto-stopping, auto driving, automatic only. Volvo decreasing top speed to 112, everything having bigger and bigger screens blocking your view. Pretty soon you will drive with a nintendo joystick and no windshield just a giant LED display in front of you that can see outside or play movies in self-driving mode. Audi, no more manuals and no more Euro Delivery. The market has spoken. People don't give a hoot about the stuff that many of grew up loving. That is why you are seeing insane prices for cars that give you an experience you can't get anymore. Even E36s are going up in price because even thought they were not as good as the other ones, in comparison to the stuff coming out today, they give an experience you can't get anymore.

So yes, the M2 is to the E36 M3 as the 1M is to the E46. While not as special, in the not too distant future, will have following. Especially the manual ones.

I don't think it is at all surprising; the M2 is not all that special. I would expect it to depreciate like most other BMW M Cars.

I like, but most definitely do not love, my M2. I drive it largely in the winter with snow tires, and otherwise to avoid putting miles on my other cars that I would prefer to drive more. It's a sort of personal restraint on my part.

you can easily find these for around $40k. pretty sure they will be in the $30-35k range soon.

they have produced an absurd amount of M2s. like 15k for just the US or something nuts like that.....

eventually these will depreciate like other 'regular' M cars. down to $15k.....

they're good cars. have driven a few.....but nothing memorable, IMO.

The biggest difference, IMO, between 1M and M2 is the Steering. I've never driven 1M, but I did drive M2 and M2 Comp. No matter how good it is, but the electric steering doesn't give that confidence driving the car. Maybe it's just me.
Due to steering 1M will remain more sought after.

The steering is certainly a very big factor, but the overall experience is different in other ways. The 1M is an analog car and the M2 is a modern, digital like car full of various sorts of nannies that can get annoying if you are looking for a direct connection between driver and machine. The M2 is a more comfortable car, but the "connectedness" has largely been engineered out.

The M2 is certainly dull when it comes to feeling and pure connection to the car.

They are completely different cars....in fact, I really feel that when BMW worked on the M2 they wiped the slate clean (of all 1M things) and started from scratch.

I don't see a evolution from the 1M to the M2....I see and feel a completely different car!

I got a free day of "driving school" at the BMW Performance Center (in Thermal, CA), as a result of the purchase of my M2. For $700, I upgraded the day of basic driving school to a day of "M" school. I did this in December.

In the course of the day's work, we all got a couple of opportunities to drive the M2, M3, and M4, in various maneuvers; we kept switching the cars back and forth. All of the cars were automatics, which in the end didn't matter much because there was so much stuff we were supposed to be doing with the accelerator, the brake, and the steering wheel, on the very short tracks we drove on, that I'm not sure I could have handled manual shifting anyway.

For the record, although the day was fun, I didn't feel like I learned much that I could apply to my typical sort of driving, which occurs on public roads and not on the track.

What was surprising to me was that in spite of the size difference between the M2 and the M3/M4, I didn't detect very much difference in how they drove. All were quite powerful, but also quite numb, when compared to a 1M, or even to your basic 1-Series car.

If BMW still made cars like the 1-Series, I wouldn't even consider buying a current M-Car.

I have a 135is Convertible, with around 10K miles. I bought it used from Carmax, when it had only about 6K miles, which was spread between two brief prior ownerships. It's like a new car in most respects and I really enjoy it, with the caveat that where I live doesn't have the best weather for a convertible.

The big problem with owning any BMW past the warranty period is that these cars are full of expensive gotchas; more so the more recent ones. It doesn't take that many years before you are taking the risk of an expensive repair that might cost almost as much as the value of the car. Regular 135i cars have depreciated to that point already. My 1M has a bad odor inside which I think indicates an imminent A/C evaporator replacement, to the tune of $3500. The 1M is obviously valuable enough that doing this repair is a no-brainer.

But what if you owned a 2010 135i with 60,000+ miles that was worth under $10K? What would you do?

So just picking up an older BMW with hydraulic steering and road feel isn't necessarily a smart thing to do unless you are well-capitalized and willing to spend what it will take to keep the car on the road.

My next new BMW may be a Miata.
