Engine splash shield

My splash shield has a few cracks that aren't too bad - yet. So I'm considering repairing. Any experience with repairs?? I've seen talk on various car forums about either duct tape, Gorilla Tape, fibreglass cloth and resin (like a surfboard repair) or epoxy and fibreglass cloth.

If replacement becomes necessary, anybody have recent experience with aftermarket parts? OE is too pricey when shipping is factored in.

Yes -that's it.

The way mine is damaged, I don't think stitching it would help much. There's a small area that is a good bit broken up so tape would be a good solution, but, I don't know if it will adhere and last.

I found some aftermarket replacements not too pricey. My caution in buying one is will they fit right. That shield is difficult enough to get in place with a perfect factory fit.

Two words: Gorilla Tape. Sticks very well. Almost permanent. If you go through car washes with a chassis bath, you might have to replace it every now and then. Maybe when you are down there changing the oil.

Peace... Mack

I used fibreglass tape with a 2-stage plastic epoxy. Complete overkill.

FYI - I found some aftermarket parts for ~ $80 delivered but wasn't too sure if they would be a perfect fit. The damn things are hard enough to re-install with the OE parts.

Wondering if this is one of those things to be bought and held in spares as they are unique to our cars (like the 3rd brake light).

I wouldn't buy an under car shield as a proactive measure, although I do tend to stock up on regular maintenance items when I see a good deal.

Where do you drive that is so hard on the bottom of you car? You going off road? Hitting small animals?

Peace... Mack

No off-road adventures for me

I got careless with the front center jack point and cracked the shield around that spot.

I just had to remove the shield to make sure everything was ok and then put it back on for the 2nd time. I've r&r'd it 3 times in the last few weeks so am getting pretty good at installation.

Garage List
'09 135i  [10.00]
I picked up one from Amazon back in 2016- fit is perfect and it's lasted fine, still in great shape. It is a tad more flexible than the OE part, but considering the cost difference and that it's been perfect for four years, I totally don't care that it's a bit more flexible.

$55 and free shipping

Check your local listings for part outs.

Wrecked 1 series pop up reasonably frequently near me.

I think a little more flexible would be good.

For some reason that's less than what I found on Amazon for a 128i. I guess you guys with all the hp need a break on some parts

Not too often around here. I'm in Houston area where the 'People's Car' is a Suburban.

Maybe check some euro salvage yard type of places. I'm sure there's one a reasonable distance away. Worth a shot

I think my repair job is going to hold up - until I do something stupid again.

Actually considering buying one and just putting into my inventory. I'm like quite a few on here and want to keep my 1er for as long as possible. Some parts may get hard to find considering how long these cars have been out of production and didn't sell that many.

Almost embarrassed to say - I bought a 3rd brake light for when needed. Problem with doing the same for the shield is the space required.
