which LSD?
So I'm new to the 1-scene and I'm curious which differential is best. Seems like there are a number out there:
Quaife WaveTrac BMW offers a Torsen Some others? Which one is best? I know a Torsen is usually limited to 50% power to the wheel with traction, so I'm assuming either the Quaife or the WaveTrac? Application: track and autox. Thanks! |

I believe Quaife was the only option for my steptronic 135 when I upgraded. Might not be the case now but I didn't mind anyways, I assume I woulda went with a Quaife anyways.

Wavetrac have a diff for all models. I have a wavetrac and it works very well except that it has a very annoying and pronounced "clunk" on changes of torque direction (on/off throttle, down changes and changing between 1st and reverse). Not impressed with the customer service either!

Does BMW support their Torsen design under warranty? I've got a '13 and while I wouldn't be opposed to losing the warranty on the diff. for a Quaife, I'm wondering if they would void the whole driveline or not?
Any opinions on the BMW diff? http://www.dinancars.com/shop/D773-0...ly.aspx#page=1 |

Isn't the Quaife a Torsen type diff?
$3k for the Dinan Torsen, how much is the OEM? Our current Civic has a Torsen and after explaining how it works to the wife, she green lighted installing one in the 135. |

MightMouseTech: My understanding was that the Quaife design could transfer more power to the wheel with traction than a Torsen. WaveTrac claims their diff can transfer nearly 100% to the loaded wheel.

MightMouseTech: Yes, you are of course correct, but there are different kinds of Torsen's. I was under the impression that Quaife did something different than a standard Torsen, but I am not sure.
How much torque can the Quaife transfer %-wise? Is the WaveTrac claim of nearly 100% bogus? How about the BMW/Dinan Torsen? Anyone have one? from wiki: Quote:

subscribed. I know the new cars have a "welded" diff thats apparently really hard to remove without replacing the full axle...is this true or am I talking nonsense?

Twhill, not nonsense, you just didn't quite have it right. You don't have to replace the full axle but the mod is more difficult if "welded". I'm not sure which of our cars are welded vs bolted or which cars have which options these days. My car was bolted and the only option back then in 2010 for my car was Quaife. If you get more serious about this mod and can't figure out what is true, just contact Harold at HPA, he always knows the answer on these type issues.

I have a BNIB wavetrac for a bolted diff that I will sell for around $1100 shipped to the usa:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=820960 It fits all 135i manual types (if you're bolted it bolts straight in, if you're welded you will have to have your ring gear machined and drilled to bolt it in - as you would with any diff) |

http://www.howstuffworks.com/differential6.htm Sounds like the Torsen is perfect for cars with the OEM electronic brake simulated lock. Guess we need to find out what the locking ratio is between all the Torsen style diffs. I am a huge fan of Torsens (have I written that word often enough in here yet?) Have one in the current Civic, and had one in the racecar. I really like how they feel/drive, and they have to be driven differently than a car with an open diff. On a FWD they make the car understeer worse when off the power, but on power, they really pull the front end where you want to go. Found this on the Torsen website: http://www.torsen.com/general/general_faq.htm Quote:

Thanks MightyMouseTech. I'm really thinking about the Dinan LSD unit. Seems like it should be less trouble to get installed and will preserve the warranty.
I am a big fan of Torsens as well. Have had them on 4 Miata's and a RX-8. But those were all OEM diffs. |

Still trying to search the OEM unit you mentioned. Is this just a unit from a 1M? |

Hey all, finally got my car, strongly thinking about the Dinan Torsen LSD.
Does ANYONE have one???? Seems like everyone has Quaife or WaveTrac. I would really like to preserve my warranty by going Dinan. http://www.dinancars.com/shop/D773-0...ly.aspx#page=1
