Simplified PE exhaust mod

So I've been wanting to do the PE exhaust mod for a while but was putting it off because I was lazy and didn't have access to a welder.

So today I did the mod in a simplified and cheaper way. No need to weld or remove the muffler and the cut is at the top so it's hidden.

You'll need:
Dremel or grinder with cutting wheel
Etorx 8mm socket to remove the right side muffler hanger mount (easier than pulling off the rubber hanger)
Lubricant to loosen the rubber exhaust hanger (I used wd40, tyre shine and Windex)
8mm socket to remove the rear diffuser (m sport 135i bumper)
Aluminium foil (Kitchen foil) $A3
Epoxy putty (in weld) $A15

Step 1:
Remove the rear diffuser.
It has 6 X 8mm bolts holding it on, plus some clips. Loosen bolts and pull it out away from the bumper

Step 2:
Undo etorx bolt on right side

Step 3:
Put something under the muffler that is about 25cm high to support the muffler when you drop it in the next step

Step 4
Jam a screwdriver into the rubber exhaust hanger and spray lubricant.
Pull the exhaust hanger out and off the muffler. Lower the muffler

Step 5
Use the Dremel or equivalent to cut a small square in the same position as the photo. Take careful note of the ridges.
Only cut through 3 sides and just score the back side so U can fold up the flap as per the photo

Step 6
Flip up the small door you just created

Step 7
Scrunch up aluminium foil and jam it into the hole. Try and fill up the further most side first. That is where the 3 exhaust holes are in the pipe.
The idea is that the more U fill the louder it is because the exhaust gas had no where to escape to. It's similar to wrapping the pipe without the troubles.

Originally I was going to wrap the pipe with aluminium foil and clamp it with hose clamps, but I couldn't get the foil or clamp around the pipe. Since I wasn't welding and didn't want to remove the muffler, I wanted the door uncut to be as small and discreet as possible.

Step 8

Close the door and use jb weld or other Hight temp epoxy putty to seal the door. Make sure to clean and sand the surface before using the putty.

Louder exhaust note, similar to the $1400 performance exhaust, without the price tag.

The restricted baffles forces exhausts to flow out the tailpipe without the turbulence of going throughout the muffler baffles.

I found this easier and more discreet than the regular alternatives of cutting a big hole and wrapping with tape

Don't be so dramatic, it's just copying the pe exhaust instead of paying 2k for the same result.

Yeah, most PE's can be purchased for $750 or less(in the USA). But this member's Location is in Melbourne Australia. Everything is more "down under".

Must be a harrowing experience for you day to day then.

Thanks for posting the DIY, OP. Would have liked to try this if I still had my OE exhaust.

You really need to cover up the Y section in the muffler for this to actually provide a decent sound benefit, most of the muffling would be through this section.

This is what i did:

Better off covering the 3 big holes than the perforated holes in the middle part. These are the ones that lead to the exhaust flap.

Missed your other post about welding the y pipe perforations.

Might have to cut into the muffler again to fill up that section.
I hadn't seen anyone else tackle that section before.

Yeah, IDK if welding that section up was ever discussed in the DIY PE sticky. OP should post this there, will definitely improve the results for future people doing this.

Most of the guys in that thread have n55s, which don't have perforations in that pipe. N54 exhausts have the perforations. Different part numbers on realoem too.
