I have a 2008 128i manual.
I wanted the 3.7 r&p so I also have an auto from a 2013 with only 28k, It's 10 bolted.

What can I ask the seller so he can measure to make sure it will fit. I'm ok with grinding the pumpkin if I need to.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/111809882552

This listing has them all the same internals.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-1-3-SER....m46890.l49292
The ad says the maker of the diff is 3J Drivelines out of the UK. Maybe they can help if the ebay seller isn't sure?
https://www.3jdriveline.com/differen...-applications/

Based on my own research, it should fit - from the application notes on Diffsonline wavetrack fitment:

Thanks man. I sent him an email.

From what I read in mfg site I need a 30/90
# idk. 230 hp with 3stage abs tune so maybe the higher lock 70lbs.

Am I understanding correctly?

I'm thinking 30/90 is the ramp angle? It depends on a lot of factors: power/weight/usage/driving style, etc. I would go for something with a little bit more decel ramp (a lower number), which will apply more preload during decel. What you'll feel is the rear being a bit looser under decel, which you might want for rally to help with a flick on entry but comes at the cost of still locking on high-speed decel making it looser on high speed sweeping corners. On the other hand, the 1er is short wheelbase and makes decent torque so you might not need the help to get the rear around.

One thing to consider is being a rally car, you might want to spend extra on a diff with tunable ramp angles (Mfactory for example), so you can use it as part of the car setup - although it means dropping and disassembling the diff to change the ramp angle. It's one more way that you can tune the car's setup.

Hopefully you get an email back. Looking around some more, these guys show the E82 as being a 168mm diff and different than an E46.

Yeah I do t mind spending $1500 to get all the tuning abilities. Looks just like a Cusco.

https://dsportmag.com/the-tech/speed...fferentials/8/

The 3j has two angles included to play with. I don't think I want to much lock on deceleration. Your right mad hatter should get enough turn in with a 128. If not little handbrake will pitch it in.

So here is a 168 lsd I have next to my 128i auto that the lsd is going in for it's 3.7 r&p.

I have some dimensions to racingdiffs when I was thinking about there cheep conversation and they said it was a 188L not an LW as it should be.

I haven't really found a definitive answer on something I can measure or someone who knows the "diff" between the 188's.

Well, I've managed to invest the better part of my day today reading and researching BMW diffs and LSDs. Here's what I've been able to gather with reasonable certainty:

Early 168/188/210,215
Used on early BMWs to late 90s (98/99?), and continued on M cars through all E-chassis
-identified by having the bolt-on side covers
*Does not share parts with "K" or "L" series diffs below

Model 168K/L
Axle seal bore measures 78mm
*168K*
4 cyl cars up to 2006
uses taper roller bearings
E46
Z3?
*168L*
4cyl cars from 2006
uses ball bearings
E8X, E9X, F-?
ie: 118i, 120i, 318i, 320i etc

Model 188K/L
Axle seal bore measures 90mm
*188K*
6 cyl cars up to 2006
uses taper roller bearings
E46
Z3?
5-series?
*188L*
6cyl N/A cars from 2006
uses ball bearings
E8x, E9x
ie: 128i, 130i, 328i, 330i
*early 135i automatic models

Model 215L
Axle seal bore measures 100mm
6cyl turbo cars from 2006
M cars from
E8x, E9x
ie: 135i manual and 135i DCT

**K/L interchange notes:
-Ring & Pinions are not interchangeable between K/L series
-Bearings are not interchangeable between K/L series
-LSD units ARE interchangeable between K/L series

WOW that real is definitive! Can't thank you enough.

I emailed synchrotech trans who is USA dealer.

https://shop.synchrotech-transmissio...TRS-10E90A.htm

I measured it's 90mm seal OD.

So I can use a 188k or l lsd is interchange but not bearings.

Model 188K/L
Axle seal bore measures 90mm

*188K*
6 cyl cars up to 2006
uses taper roller bearings
E46

5-series?

*188L*

Dang madhatter that’s some good info. So theoretically, you could find an LSD out of someone’s E46 (i know it’ll be aftermarket) and it would fit?

on this drawing you will find the main values to check for a 188 LSD

I hope it helps.

So....skid plates.

They really take a beating in rally! They need to cover bumper to trans.

These photos are from an e30 on this landing. I'm sure there was damage before this but the Aluminum grabs and bends. They broke there oil pan. DNF. I'm hoping the Ti sheet will "sled" along my undercarriage.

1series has some nice subframe points for attachment. I order some 24/48" .05 sheet TITANIUM! Replaceable sheet for its hardness and light weight. $70 each I got two a spare.

I was recommended 5052 1/4 for the mass of the plate. It will fill 24" in the middle scoop area and go 48" back. I don't want any bolt head showing so I'm going to have to get creative. the aluminum will bolt and have torx countersunk bolts. The Ti over sheet could hook and bolt under the bumper lip of the front edge of aluminum, and at the rear turn 90° and bolt to a bracket.

I love my car but it's going to live every sports cars dream of become a race car.

It will be the first 128i rally car in North America.

Rally in America is growing fast!

I'm pretty excited about it. Thanks for following.

New radiator nothing fancy.

While I am in there....

Cleaned whole from top to bottom of the n52.
In 200k I don't know if it has ever been done. It's on its second valve cover. It was a mess.

Straightened some ac condenser fins from a life of big Texas bug impacts.

Belt off dental pick all grooves. Found some shredded belt debris in the ac pump.
Wire brushed the grease bumps off the flat pulleys. All bearings felt fine.

Vanos solenoids out they looked fine cleaned and installed but found a wire sheath worn lean through! Put a 4" larger one over it.

Installed some AVT air scoops. They catch more and are more vertical. I like them better than the Afe.

Started it the other day. Cracked the hub nut off easy put the puller on and it was to smal. Put it all back together and am waiting on the large puller now. Rural problems. I'm an hr from an auto store to rent. Figured I need the tools anyway.

Definitely excited to get the front on also!

My brother has a lathe and machined my struts to fit my spring cap bearings and camber plates. Should have those back next week.
