Red face Something different, what was the WORST moment in your 1er??

Since I've had two 1ers I'll do both to get things kicked off. Both are very easy calls as far as "worst moment" goes!!

My 2011 135i's worst moment was the .05 of a second when I blew the motor and simultaneously welded the clutch and flywheel together and destroyed the transmission as well. THAT was fun (/end sarcasm).

A sad day for the 135 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

For the 2013 135i it was definitely when my dumb self tried to make a yellow when the person in front of me had a different idea. Lesson learned, $9,001 (yes really) repair bill for a 10mph accident later and I was back in it. Don't have any pics handy from the accident itself but here it is in the BMW repair center getting mended.

*edit* stole and attached a pic from my instagram from when the accident happened

How exactly was that nine grand repair? I see a bumper cover, one grill, one headlight assembly, and a hood. Was there a lot of hidden damage behind all that?

Less than 5mph. Rear ended a Chevy Avalanche. Body shop estimate was $19k if I remember correctly. Car was deemed a total loss. Bought it back from insurance company after I realized all the damage was bolt off/bolt on. Put it back on the road and bought an 08 X3 with the money I got from the insurance company. Shitty day but turned out good in the end.

Sorry, I think you meant less than 50mph, not 5.

I have the full set of invoices somewhere but off the top of my head:
  • Hood
  • Radiator
  • Rad Support
  • RF Fender repair
  • AC Condensor
  • Intercooler
  • A few pulleys
  • Bumper cover
  • Bumper bar
  • Couple hoses
  • Coolant/fluids
  • Headlight (this alone was like 1.3k)
  • Both grilles (other was actually cracked just hard to see)

Like Eddy above I had the shop do the big stuff/paint, then drove it home without a front bumper and did the rest at home. Pocketed a decent bit of cash after saving on labor and some parts I found used.

Ouch but glad it all worked out! Did you have to deal with the salvage title?

Lol it was probably about 5mph honestly, mine was also very slow. These cars are made of crumple zones!

Yeah no.

I had a hit upfront at around 20 that did much less damage than that.

But ok

But ok
Impact location matters a ton, check where we both hit, above the bash bar. I have GPS data I used to prove to my insurance along with my dashcam footage that I was barely moving for my case.

True. I mostly hit the bumper, that car seems to have missed the bumper and gone straight to the hood.

That's exactly what happened in my case. The Avalanche bumper was way higher than mine. Impact went straight into the hood and front grill. Luckily zero fender damage and zero frame damage. The headlights alone on the estimate came to over $5000. I got the majority of what I needed from a 2010 that had been rear ended. Fixed and replaced a bunch of stuff while I was in there. The car is better now than before the accident. Only shitty thing is it has a salvage title but I don't really care about future value. It's now a toy I can have fun with and not be too concerned.

When my clutch went. This happened twice. The second time I was about 500 feet from my house and my foot went to the floor and coasted to a parking lot near my home. 3 hours later on a flatbed to the dealer.

When the god damn fucking texting soccer mom in her piece of shit Caravan tagged me in the rear 1/4. And then the paint job to fix it. Ugh.

Luckily, got it repainted at another body shop. Came out perfect.

When my starter cable had whithered away (not to my knowledge) and suddenly completely got severed at 3 am on the freeway in a bad part of town, on a completely blind sweeping bank.

So yea. All the lights going out and the car completely dying on me at 80mph sucked

In 2016, right rear quarter crunched - odd accident, someone stopped on a high speed freeway split; I stopped and got on the horn, the person on the cellphone going 20 over the limit behind me didn't stop but tried to swerve (braking and steering simultaneously to little effect ; -) and this was the result. Damage was enough for it to be totalled. Oh and the person who hit me had no insurance . . .

Replaced the '08 135i with a '13 135i, like the car too much to not get another.

Also, that damage doesn't look severe enough to cause the car to be totaled. Granted, we can't see what's going on under that quarter panel, plus these cars have depreciated so much that I guess lighter than what's expected damage can cause an insurance co to total a 1er.

Yeah, they thought that there was $12k + of damage on a $15k value, which was over 75% of worth. What's unseen is the rear suspension and diff, which absorbed a good chunk of the blow. The vehicle that hit me was '95 Furd F-150. No ABS so, as the brakes locked, steering was essentially gone - it did a lazy loop after hitting me and slammed the front of the truck into the jersey barrier. It then proceeded to puke it's coolant (otherwise, if it was under control, I suspect it woulda been a hit-n-run).

I haven't had mine very long, only since last March, but the worst moment was on the day I picked it up. Me and a buddy of mine flew down to San Jose to pick it up and drive back to Seattle (super fun drive btw). On the way back we stopped at a rest stop, being new to driving manual I did not put it in gear when we parked, just pulled the E brake. Well, the e brake does NOT work well and the car slid forward into the curb leaving a pretty big gash on the underside of the bumper. I was pissed at the time but I've realized that the mark isn't all that visible lol.

While changing the front struts to some bilsteins, I found the torn out holes on the bottom of the front bumper where the previous owner removed the lip spoiler. Literally mounted it with 36 rivets...

That could have been much worse!!! I'd consider myself lucky in this case haha very gentle warning.

No accidents in mine - managed to avoid others and occasionally get avoided by others.

When my alternator quit on the way to work, it wasn't great calling for a tow from the side of the road. I think it could have run on the battery longer but the car's computer decided otherwise.

My other somewhat sad moment was on the way to work. There is a stretch of road where the speed limit goes up from 45 mph to 55 after a residential area. Aggressive drivers sometimes jump on it to pass slower moving traffic. One morning the slower driver was me and the aggressive driver was a Volvo station wagon. I usually accelerate a little harder and they have to back off. But I underestimated the Volvo and didn't down shift. Didn't feel good. In a 135i or with an automatic, I think it ends differently.
