not necessarily - here is a type of 3er console that has a cup holder inside the arm rest. Or you could get one of those ones that screws into the side of the center console (on the passenger side)

Used it in the car for a year, loved it. Never really missed the cup holder. Sold the car later in early 2016.

This is the reason I would want to do this as the cupholder hole looks odd.
