I've seen pictures of a couple/few different of those 5 door hatchback race cars (one was for sale). I think they are stripped out (light) and run 2 liter engines.

The one in the opening post, a 120d, didn't finish this year. Last year, it finished 27th place overall, and 5th in 2006 (ahead of all other BMW's including M3's, CSL's, Z3 M Coupes, etc).
