T-golf mod
Hey guys,
So today I was at my BMW dealer putting some parts and I was talking about the golf mod we do the bmwpe exhaust and they recommended me to put it back because this way the car looses some back pressure. What do you guys think? I think the lost of back pressure if any is very marginal... |

Wow! Where were you 3 years ago! I've had a really big struggle with back pressure results with my mini, when I was designing my own custom pipe (exhaust)
This explanation is awesome!!!! Thank you!!! |

Yup.
Long story short, back pressure is never a good thing.

This is also a good example why the dealer isn't always the right place to be. In fact, I find the dealer to be useless once you have modded your car with any other than original parts.
Dealers have a tendency to use your mods for an excuse to charge extra or to use them as a cause for problems that are simply not there. I have seen this happening with my own eyes.

And if I hear yet another bogus post about how "back pressure" in an exhaust system is somehow necessary and beneficial, I may barf all over my keyboard.

I suppose this may be the case outside the US, but I've never had the same experience. I've had a great relationship with the service advisors and the technicians who have worked on my cars, some of which were significantly modified. My guess is that they knew I was pretty knowledgeable about cars in general, particularly engines and drivetrains and didn't try to BS me - although friends of mine who used the same dealerships also reported good experiences with the service department personnel.

yeah, getting ideal scavenging may result in slightly more backpressure.. but it's not the backpressure that is the benefit, it's the sizing of the piping.
