Very good! I'm going to try mine in a couple of weeks and post pictures of my progress.

Is this something similar to what you bought?

Did you buy waterproof ones?

I didn't buy the strip. I think with that they come soldered into the strip. I got 20 individual pieces. They came in a little tray with plastic over the top. Each led had its own indent in the tray. Search for 3528 SMD 100 pcs. No i didn't get the waterproof ones. Figure if water gets in the instrument cluster the leds are the least of my problems. Haha. Definitely post how it turns out. Supposedly the radio requires smaller ones than that for the radio buttons. Still trying to find the number for those.

I took a look inside and look these pictures:

The first one is of the light dial on the left of the steering wheel.

The second is the AC controls

The third is the LED screen inside the AC unit.

The LED's inside of the LED screen of the AC unit seemed to be the same side as the light dial and the AC controls.

I assume these are all smaller than the gauge LEDs

Hope this was helpful! If you find out the size let me know.

Damn dude, that's awesome. Those look exactly the same as the 3528 SMD LEDs I got. I've seen the ones inside the light switch before. I did the fog light mod. According to, I think his handle is e90tom3, the ones across the bottom of the radio are smaller. Is it a pain to get the climate control piece out? been kinda worried about taking that apart. I haven't seen the inside of the steering wheel controls yet either but that looks really easy to get those out. Looks like I'm gonna order 100 or so more of those LEDs. It took 3 weeks for them to get here. Still not sure where I'm gonna put the white ones I got.

I just ordered 100 white LEDs and they should be here by the end of the month I guess it's okay though considering I paid only $3 haha The climate control piece was pretty easy. It was my first time taking apart the interior and it went successfully. I disconnected the battery and just followed this link http://www.fitaudio.com/?View=entry&EntryID=164 on how to pry out the climate control. Once it's out unplug the wires. There are around 8 clips around the climate control panel. Just unclip those and it all comes apart. Putting it together is much easier haha

I like that a lot! That's the color I would have gone with as well. Would it be possible to keep the two center displays orange but the gauges white? That might make it blend into the rest of the orange center stack, etc, better. I guess the orange LEDs might bleed into the gauges too much.

Yes that would be possible! Each big gauge consists of 3 LEDs while the small gauge, such as the fuel gauge, uses 1 LED. The LEDs surround a metal rod that holds the needles and the light reflects up those needles to illuminate the needle. But in all, the orange LCD LEDs won't bleed into the gauge

If you need any assistance please let me know! I am part way through the AC unit and about to start on the radio!

Dude that looks great! Definitely post up the finished ac unit. Can't wait to start mine. Do you have any pics of it in the dark?how did the soldering go? I ended up using a pencil and pushing down on the led while my buddy tacked it in place.

I'm going to start on the radio in the next couple of days! And i'll post pictures once everything is done!

Soldering went well, a little tricky as you know haha but it went well. As I progressed I definitely got a lot better!

I don't get it - the whole purpose of orange/red lighting is to preserve night vision. Why would one compromise that?

The M3/1 have white gauges. I could see the blue being distracting.

The goal is to get everything blue. Once I get more time ill get everything blue. The blue is not distracting to me. It's rather soft. Can't wait to get everything else blue. Looks a little weird with just the gauges blue.

I got the steering wheel converted to blue lights and the climate control. Did you have any trouble with the backing behind the LCD screen? It's orange. I'm going to try a white piece of paper and see how that works. I can't do the radio yet because there are 2 screws that are buried in there and I don't have anything yet to get to them. Until I get that tool I'll do the window controls and the light switch. Will post more pics when I get them all done.

DIY: blue LED's in instrument cluster. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=771058

Or you can search blue led in DIY.
You can't retro-fit the same LED's from the AC unit onto the radio LCD panel? or is there just no room to put them on/specific spot for only those LEDs?

Really nice DIY sir, looks like you put in a lot of hard work.

Aesthetically, Its really not my thing at all. The white gauge faces are ok, but the M, the 135i logo and the blue lights I really don't care for.
