Damn that's insane, haven't ever seen such a poorly maintained motor. Good choice buying another.
I want to stress these coolant connections are quick-connects, not quick-disconnects . Take a hard look at them while you do the initial shakedown, I put a pinhole leak/crack in my radiator from yanking off the upper rad hose.

Car almost done.
Drove it for the first time today. Just need to install bumper and some trim. Car runs good, engine is nice and smooth. Transmission shifts nicely. Only issue I noticed is the power steering lines have small leaks around the crimps. Sucks since those damn lines are expensive.s Got brake light on as well, front brakes are shot, will need to replace them. |

Great project! It's amazing how nicely things clean up with some elbow grease. It's possible that the old engine still had the original oil from the factory.

Congrats on the startup! It's gonna be a sweet first car (mine certainly is!)...

TPMS won't sync. I think the wheels are from a 2012 and the sensors are not compatible. Total pain in the ass, will have to get the old wheels and tires dismounted and steal the old sensors.

Might be worth it to just buy new sensors. Might cost a few bucks more but saves the hassle of dragging a set of wheels to the tire shop. You can code the sensors off as well I believe.

I had to yank my upper rad hose so hard the neck on the radiator cracked ever so slightly.

Well done! What an amazing job, and I bet your son will take much better care of the car now that he's put some of his own blood, sweat, and tears into it.
Incidentally, you could've left the 528i's oil/coolant heat exchanger on the engine, it just requires a few small plumbing changes to get it to work. I recently retrofit the heat exchanger onto mine, but I was simultaneously changing the OFHG, doing a coolant flush, and replacing a leaking engine coolant pipe gasket, so it was kind of kismet. There was basically zero additional labor involved.

On the steering lines you can likely pull off the old ones and find a local hydraulic line shop that makes brake lines make you a set for 1/4 the cost of oem.

Magically they don't leak anymore... not sure if there was residual fluid on them or the just sealed themselves....

New Job brakes!
This owner... I have no words.... Car has almost new pads in the front, but these are the rotors.... Pads.... So they just slapped pads on old destroyed rotors and not a care in the world... |

Also finished interior. Got some new floor mats and darker wood trim, couldn't stand the other color.
