God damn. Even when you put the money down, they wont let you leave the lot without some salesman in it. Hell, when my MINI first came in, I drove down specifically to test drive this particular car to make sure that there were no problems and that everything ran smoothly. It took 15 minutes of bickering to convince the salesman that I could test drive my car (that I had them snag from another dealership) before I bought it.
I do remember that GM did this 24 hour test drive promotion. I loved the idea but I dont think you can do it anymore.

Erm, I can't compare directly - but a 335i is the equivalent of $70,000 over here. I think you pay around $41,000 for one? Obviously the % difference will change as you get cheaper, but if a tii here is the equivalent of $50,000, say $30,000 over there??

MPower - I think it just depends on the dealership's rules. Every dealership is probably different and has different level's of insurance to cover such test drives...
I'd love to take a 135i for a weekend or overnight when they come in, but I bet they will be going out quite quick for the first year. Plus, I wouldnt want to buy the one I take home ;P I'd want to oder one exactly how I want it, plus do ED...

While I'm sure a turbo for and lighter weight might make some here happy I don't get the idea of a slower but better handling car that will cost more than a 135i. Why not just up the boost on the TT6, add an LSD, reduce the weight and do the race inspired stuff we see in the Tii and call it a day?

^ that'd be my plan...
I've done the high-reving 4cyl before, not a bosted one, but still, I love the smoothness of the I6...

Thanks for the post, Mike. Unfortunately, a 4 cylinder car (turbo or not) is not going to be released here in the US. BMW is adamant that they will not be bringing over a 4 cylinder car for the US market. I was hoping for the 120D or the 123D to get here, but BMW seems to belief that there are no interests for 4 badger cars here in the US market. And that's a shame. |

I doubt we'll see a turbo 4 banger version over here as well, but I would be suprised if they didn't offer some sort of Tii or CSL edition above the 135i before too long.

Gee, I wonder why. Before speculations on this car, the most powerful petrol four-banger BMW had was the 2.0 liter I4 found in the 120i, 320i, and 520i. Certainly, a 170 horsepower Bimmer probably wont cut it in terms of image for BMW. But I think you will agree that this changes when you make a dedicated sports car with 240+ horsepower.

EVO tii Concept
BMW 1-Series
Tokyo show 2007: BMW TII concept Uncompromising 1-Series TII concept influenced by classic ’70S BMWs By Harry Metcalfe 14th November 2007 British designer Kevin Rice was on hand at Tokyo to talk us through his latest project at BMW, the stunning 1-series tii concept car. According to Rice, the idea of creating a stripped-out 1-series has been kicking around at BMW for a while, with the super-stiff three-box model (which was planned from the start of 1-series development) being viewed as the ideal starting point. Sat on the BMW stand at the show, the tii looks amazing, production-ready even. I ask Rice how much work had gone into creating it. ‘It was really easy,’ he replies. ‘The front and rear bumpers are all new, the sills are different, and the bonnet was created in carbonfibre. This was done for two reasons: it saves 15kg compared to a standard item and it also recreates the black-bonnet look common on cars like this in the ’70s – cars like the BMW 2002 tii, in fact.’ More work has been done inside to emphasise that this is a true drivers’ car. The standard seats have been ditched in favour of a pair of winged Recaros, the dash now sports a white-faced rev-counter complete with oil temperature gauge, and Alcantara is everywhere, maximising the driver’s grip and minimising reflections. The footwells, meanwhile, are lined with a new textile that gives a similar appearance to the carbonfibre components. For the driver’s side of the cabin there’s a subtle blue theme, with blue stitching for the seat and door insert, plus a blue seat-belt. The passenger, on the other hand, gets silver seat-belts and stitching and not much else – even the passenger-side electric window can only be operated from the driving seat. Unfortunately there’s no word as to what’s under the bonnet, or whether the tii will go into production. ‘We’re not saying anything about engines yet,’ says Rice. ‘This is a BMW AG car, not an M-car, so it will not have the six-cylinder M Power engine. We will see what the reaction is to this concept first, but it could be the six-cylinder twin-turbo engine from the 135i or, alternatively, a turbo four-cylinder, like the ultimate version of the original 2002 had.’ So BMW is going to build it then? ‘No comment.’ |

YESSSS!!!! There is hope for a high performance 4 cyl engine. What would really suck is if BMW makes the car and then doesn't bring it to the U.S. Leif W. |
