You're talking directly with a manufacturer, so I am always going to be slightly biased towards our own product
Here's something I came up with that should help: Daily Driver only: Go to 1 Daily Driver + Drag Racing: Go to 1 Daily Driver + Occasional Track Day: Go to 2 Daily Driver + Regular Track Day: Go to 2 Track Car: Go to 3 1: Torsen-style LSD Your best option would be a Torsen-style LSD (also commonly called: Helical LSD, ATB, Torque-Biasing Differential, Torque-Sensing Differential) - How important is the Brand Name & Country of Manufacture to you? - Most important. Bragging rights down at the pub: The Quaife ATB is recommended - Important, but quality is also equally important: Go to 1a - Important, but Value-for-money is most important: The MFactory Helical LSD is recommended 1a: Manufacturing Metallurgy: MFactory - Impression-Die Forged SAE4320 Housings. Cold-Forged SAE9310 Internals Quaife - Milled SAE8620H Housings & Internals Wavetrac - Milled SAE8620 Housings. Milled SAE9310 Internals Additional Treatments: MFactory - Super-Sub Zero Treated (Deep Cryogenic). Ti-Moly Shot-Peening (increases surface hardness and auto-lubrication). Zinc-Oxide Coating on Housings Quaife - None Wavetrac - Zinc-Oxide Coating on Housings Hardware: MFactory - Brighton-Best 12.9 Bolts Quaife - Brighton-Best 12.9 Bolts Wavetrac - ARP 12.9 Bolts Quality Control: MFactory - ISO Regulated Quaife - ISO Regulated Wavetrac - Non-Regulated - How important is strength to you (i.e how much power the LSD can handle)? - Most Important. Imma gonna be pushing over 1000bhp! The MFactory Helical LSD is recommended - Important, but performance is also equally important: Go to 1b 1b: Design/Performance Bias Ratio: MFactory - Up to approx. 75% torque transfer to the wheel with traction Quaife: Up to approx. 66% torque transfer to the wheel with traction Wavetrac: Up to approx. 66% torque transfer to the wheel with traction - How important is transferring the most torque to the wheel with traction? - Most Important. The MFactory Helical LSD is recommended - Important, but I also need traction under zero-load conditions: Go to 1c 1c: The Marketing Gimmick Zero Load (i.e One wheel in air): MFactory - Will behave like open diff Quaife - Will behave like open diff Wavetrac - Has internal "wave" mechanism to redirect the torque transfer - How often do you lift one wheel in to the air (be honest now)? - 0-5% of the time. Go to 1d - 5-10% of the time. Do you use Traction Control? Yes: Go to 1d. No: The Wavetrac Differential is recommended - 90% of the time. Are you sure this is a daily driver? Go to 3 1d: Warranty/Support Warranty: MFactory - Lifetime, Globally Transferable Warranty Quaife - Lifetime, Region-Locked Non-Transferable Warranty (yup, you read that correctly. Always read the Terms & Conditions of sale before you buy. Don't just believe what the Seller tells you) Wavetrac - Lifetime, Region-Locked Transferable Warranty Support: MFactory - Call them during office hours, or 24/7 via the MFactory Email/Ticket System (most tickets answered within a few hours) Quaife - Call them during office hours, or wait for an email reply Wavetrac - Call them during office hours, or wait for an email reply - How important is after-sales support and warranty? - Most Important. Only you can decide which brand is most suitable for you - Important, but Value-for-money is more important: The MFactory Helical LSD is recommended 2: Undecided - How tolerant are you of loud mechanical banging/cracking noises when in the parking lot and/or during slow manoeuvring? - Non-Tolerant. Go to 1 - Tolerant. Go to 2a 2a: Still undecided - How tolerant are you of vibration/jerkiness/harshness when in the parking lot and/or during slow manoeuvring? - Non-Tolerant. Go to 1 - Tolerant. Go to 3 3: Salisbury-type LSD Your best option would be a Salisbury-type LSD (also commonly called: Clutch type LSD, Plate type LSD, Metal Plate LSD) - How important is the Brand Name & Country of Manufacture to you? - Most important. Bragging rights down at the pub: The Insert British Brand Name Here (Gripper, Titan, 3J etc) is recommended - Important, but performance is also equally important: Go to 3a - Important, but Value-for-money is most important: The MFactory Metal Plate LSD is recommended 3a: Design/Performance Pre-Load type: British Brand: External Cone-Washers (High Pre-Load. Lock is an on/off switch) MFactory: Internal Pre-Load Springs (Adjustable Pre-Load. Lock is progressive) Japanese Brand: Cusco and OS Giken use Pre-Load Springs. The rest use External Cone-Washers Ramp Angles: British Brand: Adjustable MFactory: Adjustable Japanese Brand: Adjustable Lock Capacity: British Brand: Adjustable MFactory: Adjustable Japanese Brand: Adjustable - How important to you is having a smooth, progressive lock during cornering? - Most important. I want to keep jerkiness/harshness to a minimum. The MFactory Metal Plate LSD, Cusco or OS Giken is recommended - Not important. I like driving slower around corners. The Insert British Brand Name Here (Gripper, Titan, 3J etc) or Japanese Brand (except Cusco/OS Giken) is recommended Disclaimer: This was just done for fun, as I keep seeing the same questions over and over again. The information that I provide is for informational purposes only, and is not a defacto guide to choosing an LSD. As I said, just for fun! |
