09 iDrive Pro nav plays DVD movies while stopped (belgium) will this work in USA?

I'm curious if the New idrive will play DVDs (while stopped of course) when it hits our shores, or if this is a feature bmw will strip for some reason?

thanks,

L

I see no use for this feature at all. Unless I am on a car ferry for over two hours, and feel the need to watch a movie. Where else?

My speculation is it will not be available on US-spec 09's, but a OEM-style aftermarket company will probably bring a modified Euro plug-n-play unit that will allow for TV/DVD-in-motion playback. At least that's how it's been done on earlier BMW's.

Hey guys on the 09's the Nav is not DVD based, so I'm not sure where you plan on sticking the DVD? Unless the in dash CD player is a DVD player too, which I seriously doubt. I'll let you know when I get mine in 2 weeks.

The dash slot is a DVD player. DVD's play perfectly.

Well no really rational use but cool to have... very cool... especially when i didn't know that when i decided to prof nav.

You can show off to your friends
Better than car cinema
Waiting for something/someoneo for quite a while
Go for a romantic drive with your girl and watch the movie on top of the hill, the rest depends on you
It's not like I will use it everyday but good to have because you never know...

It has front and rear PDC already. Don't know what value a camera would add. No input available that I am aware of.

I am also fairly sure in Canada/USA we will NOT get DVD movies playing. Again fairly sure it is because of our laws. It's ok for PPL to eat/txt/chat/sex/etc while driving but not watch DVD's. I think they are worried about mind control or something. Be nice though if someone had a mod to do this without having to hack the car too much. Some ppl do have times where they are stuck in the car for hours and watching DVD's would be nice. Maybe while engine is not running? HD's have really dropped in price, and continue to drop. We have 1TB HD's now at 130CAD. Be nice if it was possible to plug in more drives. Store Movies, Music, etc. Better yet, when MAC touch is out, just have wireless access to a touch screen HUD, and forget about all options, just dl and use! Now that would be hot! As new anything comes out, we just dl it and use it in the car, or where-ever.

Espressoboy, our DVD players don't work above 4kph either. So I suspect it will be the same in NA.

I can't speak for Canada, but you will never see front seat DVD playback in the USA.

I haven't tried myself yet (just got the car today), but the manual says that the iDrive does play DVDs.

OK, I tried it later today and it works. It's pretty cool, the high-res screen has a great image. However, it's wider than a wide movie, so you get vertical black bars on the sides.

Wrong. It works great. While parked it plays dvd's no problem. As soon as you take the hand brake off, it kills the video portion, but the audio stays on.
