Exclamation OMFG! My key would not work!!

I got in the E91 last night to go fetch Chinese food... and put my fob into the slot and an icon of a key appeared in the instrument cluster with a slash through it. I tried pressing the start button - and nothing would happen.

I removed the key and tried again. Exact same result.

Third try... same thing. I'm thinking WTF

Then I realized... wrong key. I had the key for the E90.

Sure am glad I didn't call BMW and pitch a fit over that one!

When we used to have all Mercedes back when Mercedes were better than BMW (up until 2000) and MBZ switched to the "smart key"...I did the same thing (several times). You're lucky you figured it out before calling BMW. I unfortunately, did not figure it out the first time, and called MBZ roadside. It's amazing how fast they can arrive when there is really no problem, and when the roadside visit makes you look like a complete ass

LEDZEP.

I saw the post and was thinking that you really haven't had the best of luck with your E90. I was half prepared for another rant. At least the problem was your fault this time, and you realised it before you let fly with your sharp wit on some poor, unsuspecting service department receptionist or service advisor.

I wonder what would happen if a family owns two E90s (say, an E90 and an E91), both of which are equipped with comfort access and where both parents are armed with the CA fobs for both cars. Would one thus be able to start up one of the E90s?

I have an Acura and a Honda, which have similar key fobs. Sometimes I press the wrong remote and wonder why it doesn't work, until I look down at my hand. How were you able to get back in the car?

How did you open the door in the first place? Or are they garage kept?

The cars are garage kept, so they're not locked. To make it worse, I DO have the colored stickers on them! I keep two separate key rings. They are identical - BMW fob and house key, and the pretty shiny silver keyring fob our dealer gave us.

A few unrelated:-

1. The last time I was fetching my Chinese take away, a van smashed its tail into the front side of my brand new just 2 months E-class 320 parked outside the restaurant. That was a day before the Chinese new year the best time to show off my new Benz. Lucky that the headlamps were in tact and it was'nt look too ugly to be driving around.

2. Yours was only the 'wrong key' this time. Just heard this story from a friend in Jakata (I m here now), a driver of a 7-Series was unable to get out from the car as all doors and windows were malfunctioned. Since the windows are 'bullet proof" and tinted black; no one could see him in the car and only he was banging the windows over an hour, he was later rescued. He was almost half a dead man due to increased carbon in the cabinet! This incident was brought up to BMW as a major issue.

3. It is a crime to be rich and own both E90 and E91 and not having at least one of them eqipped with Comfort Access.

Have a nice day.

I did something equally precious. Iīm so used to keeping the fob in my pocket that I went down to the garage, stood in front of the door, grabbed the handle and didnīt understand why it wouldnīt unlock.

Of course, leaving the key upstairs didnīt help.

I have done this once or twice, go to open the door, wonder why it isn't working, pat myself down and realise the key is missing, and go "oh shit!" and have to run back for it.

To add some lemon to the wound...

I do this with my phone all the time...jump in my car, start it - and while I'm exiting my driveway I try make a call with voice dialing...it goes "Service Unavailable" and I realise I've left my phone in the house....

(Sorry your bluetooth doesn't work so well...just caught wind of your "exploding" post)

Please elaborate.

When I was a kid in the mid 80's we had a 318i(E30) and a 1984 M-B 200E service car.
Back then M-B was still a grocery getter, ambassy car( except for the US ambassy and few others),taxi etc.and wasn't anymore reliable than a BMW.the Merc was a great car don't get me wrong but I wouldn't say better than BMW, buddy.

I do the opporsite, I keep leaving my phone in the cradle in the centre console, and then wonder why I don't hear it ringing
