Quaife LSD
Both Quaife and Wavetrac are great. However, Quaife has proven to be more reliable and without the thump and clunk many of you are experiencing(this may due to the installation process since all the units we have installed at our shop do not make the noise).

I have a Quaife on my track car and it has been nothing short of fantastic. I change diff fluid every 30k (although not necessary) but the lack if maintenance is a nice added plus.

Does your diff have a stock finned cover?

Quaife on the Z4 and I reused the finned cover that came on the Z4 . Btw it's not a M (if you were wondering why I would replace the M diff).

Nope, you gotta be catching serious air for that to be a real concern. I'm not shy when it comes to curbing and I've never had issues.

I learned that the more expensive clutch based diffs (Turner Motorsports, OS Giken, OEM) might perform better than Quaife or Wavetrac on the track but are noisier, and require rebuilds every 2-3 years (if driven on the track frequently). I got to ask, why are you considering a replacement of your stock Z4M LSD diff - are you due for a rebuild or looking for something different?

I'm looking at Performance Gearing and Diffs Online. Both sell the LSDs complete to just throw in the car, which is awesome. Best part is, is that you can spec your own static lock and ramp angles to custom tune the diff to what you want it to perform like. One major short fall of torsen diffs. Quote:
Bingo. I'm replacing the Z4M with my 128i for autocross and track. Per the class I'll be running in for SCCA (Street Touring Extreme), I can add ANY LSD, as long as I maintain stock final drive ratios. I've already bought APEX 17x8.5 wheels, TCK Dual Adjustable Suspension, along with M3 subframe bushings and for future purchase a swaybar. A LSD is next on my list I figured I'd be more happy running the 128i into a wall instead of my Z4M, which IMO is priceless. The 128 also has a lemon title on it, so I'm driving it til I blow it up regardless. Obviously I don't want to run any car into a wall, but if I had to I'd run the 128. |

I don't think anything short of studded tires will work on ice, not even 4x4 with 3 differentials. Second thought, why would you want to be driving on ice anyway? |

I live in the snow belt here in Ohio, it isn't anything surprising to wake up to 8+ inches of snow. Drove twice in these conditions, and it is just a 1 wheel spin failure coming off of a stop...once it is moving though it is a beast. Still, the Quaife acts like an open diff under braking and off-throttle...yes? |

Yes, the Quaife is open under deceleration and braking so it would not cause any unwanted handling characteristics. Quote:
I have been telling people there is virtually no performance difference between the Quaife and the Wavetrac, although Wavetrac claims better performance. |
