Help! Misfires left and right after an oil change
Good morning/afternoon,
I’ve always lurked in the forum but this is my first post. I just did an oil change on my 135i and am now experiencing multiple misfires. Here’s what happened. I’m at a loss as to what could have caused it so I’ll retrace my steps. Drove the car up unto the ramps I do oil changes on. Opened filler cap. Drained oil. Removed and replaced filter. Put drain plug back in. While I was down there I saw my 02 sensor cable got unclipped and was dangling, slid the cable back in the clip. Filled with 6.9 quarts of oil. Replaced cap. Turned car on, no issues. Car idled perfectly for around 2 minutes. I put the car into reverse to back down the ramps. As soon as i touched level ground it started misfiring like crazy. I immediately shut it off. Turned it back on briefly to read codes. Here is what I have: 29CD: Combustion misfires, cylinder 1 29CE: Combustion misfires, cylinder 2 29D0: Combustion misfires, cylinder 4 29D1: Combustion misfires, cylinder 5 2DED: Power management, closed-circuit current violation. Shadow codes: 2FDB, 30FF Had no codes before, not even the shadow codes. Facebook forums offered these two suggestions: 1. Too much oil and crankshaft is touching oil level. - I drained and refilled with half a quart less to account for residuals in the motor. 2. Fuel System related- untested 3. Adaptations/Sensor related- removed MHD tune and reset adaptation. Problem persists but codes were not appearing right away. Any suggestions on what might have happened? Also, I’m aware that starting it on ramps is not good but I have always done that with others cars with no issues. Last time I changed the oil on this car I jacked it up and then lowered it before starting, no issues. |

Did you accidentally throw out the cage in the oil filter cap ? This would cause vanos issues. Not sure that would cause misfires though.

You should have a cage like this in your oil filter cap. Some people mistakenly throw it out with old filter.
