New HPFP, Impressions
Yesterday I dropped the car off @ Desert BMW here is Las Vegas (good people) for the HPFP recall. Prior to recieving the letter, I was getting long cranks which a software update (door prime) fixed. Then shortly after the update I started getting cold start up misfires and stubles.
Besides the cold start issues, I have over the course of a year noticed a significant decrease in power which I attributed to spark plugs. I have had the JB3 installed since 1.2k miles. It is recommended they be swapped @ about 12k with a tune. I am @ 30k Plugs are in the mail so I can start fresh with the JB4. So, I dropped the car off at 9:00 and was informed it was ready around 4:30pm. The reciept stated that I recieved the new pump (446 I think?), 4 new injectors (2,3,4 & 5 ), software update (not sure what version but I will check), and the seat belt tensioner. Not bad for a workday. I left my JB3 installed for the visit on map 0. Any codes that were thrown (misfires, fuel pump etc) were thrown while the JB3 was on the high boost map. When I pulled out of the dealership, I imediately noticed crisper response not only from the throttle but from the onset of boost. I would have to guess that this is from the software but thats just it, a guess. Prior to the visit, the engine would respond to pedal input but it would take a second and maybe a half for boost to build, making a distinct transition from no boost to boost. Now, it just goes. (There is a slight lag but nothing like before.) Also, it pulls a LOT harder. I almost forgot what a 60-100 pull was supposed to feel like. And keep in mind I was running around on the Highboost map most of the time. When I first pulled out of the dealership I was on stock map. So when I got home I switched to the highboost map and . I couldn't believe how much of a difference the pump and injectors made. I honestly contributed the power loss to the spark plugs. It used to be common in my turbo'd civic to have to change them frequently. The downside of an extra safe tune. But now, I see that it was actually a combination of the plugs, injectors and pump! I can't wait to get the plugs swapped and the JB4 in. Just thought I would let you guys know my first impressions. Especially the ones that were complaining of the increased lag from the long crank software update. Update: I just noticed last night that the fuel pump still primes when the car is unlocked or the door is opened. I wonder if that will be the norm now or if they just haven't deleted it from the software.

Sweet. I'm glad I left the tune in for the servicing. It's gonna make this a breeze.

They check them some how. Not sure exactly how its done but it is part of the recall. It should say that they at least checked them on the receipt. They only replace them if they are bad.

Sure hope what you're reporting is true and that it's THE FIX. I know it may sound like a broken record, but after going in four times for HPFP issues with my '08 135, the issue makes me hesitant about getting a 1M.
Keep us updated.

My HPFP never failed but I had the dealer put the new 446 pump in and my car definitely feels smoother. I didn't have any injectors replaced, but @ 25k miles the new pump definitely made a difference.

Yeah, the throttle is now really pronounced. I also just changed my spark plugs an hour ago and took it for a spin with the JB4 on map 1. I'm amazed. I can't believe I never noticed how far the performance had degraded.
It's also interesting that a pump only has made a difference. Crazy that people are probably driving around right now missing power and smoothness they should rightfully have.

I had both a fuel pump and oxygen sensor go bad this time. After the recall work was done, I couldn't believe the difference driving the car home - much smoother throttle response and top-end pull like never before. Even my wife commented on how much faster the car felt while I ripped it open on a long, open freeway onramp. It's almost like a got a free aftermarket, low-boost software upgrade. It makes me think that the auto mags, (especially CA-based, 91 octane users, like Road & Track) need to do a "re-test" with the motor running the way it was intended to! |

Awesome! Glad it worked out for you! Yes, I agree, at least the long term articles should incorporate the pump fix.

got the recall work done last week (replaced all 6 injectors, new 446 fuel pump and reprogram) and could also feel how much smoother it was and the better throttle response

Right, but it was implemented to help the long cranks. Anyone with an earlier model N54 knows that the pump never primed before that update. So apparently BMW thought it was beneficial to the overall problem. I was just noting that it still occurs with the new software and hardware.

Yes, mine is 446. Sorry about that. I believe that is the only one that hasn't failed yet.
