I used the fine, with Meg's Ultimate Quick Detail as lube. So much easier than a bar, and I feel it worked as well, if not better.

Same here....once I discovered it...I thought of all those wasted hours!

You can install a custom fabed "J" pipe. This isn't quite the link I was looking for, but it has the math. Find the drone rpm, follow the math and weld in. J pipe should kill the drone by cancelling some of the drone waves.

Sounds like a lot of math that I'm not good at lol. I'll have to look closer at this. Sounds like it's just a silencer that's on the muffler to begin with and what's on most aftermarket companies. But I have to custom fabricate one and weld it on, something I have 0 knowledge of.

You should try the nanoscrub wash mitt... That works well, too. Practically eliminates the need to use the sponge after washing.

You know, I always wondered what that capped-off appendage on the AA, AFE and some ohter mufflers was all about. Makes sense now, but I never figured it out on my own.
My Agency Power axle-back does not include such a resonance-attenuating appendage. Sounds really good in the low and middle ranges, getting a little raucous up top. I can hear a slight drone in the highway-cruise range, but it isn't enough to bother me (but probably more than the above-mentioned units.)

Math wasn't too bad. I used 2600rpm as peak drone since that seems to be the consensus on our cars (I've never heard the Berk Race, so YMMV.)
Using 2600rpm and an inline 6, and ambient/sea level speed of sound, I came up with a 130Hz center frequency for the peak resonance. Sounds reasonable to me. That means your anti-resonance J-pipe should be about 2ft and 2 inches (26 inches) long. Your muffler shop will need to figure out where and how to weld it in. If you want to account for higher in-use exhaust temps, about 30" long is probably ideal. But much longer than any of those production versions use.
That should tame the highway drone, but is not a silencer and won't do a thing for the overall sound level. For that, you'll need a muffler - which defeats the purpose of the "race" exhaust. But if you get one from the Berk Street or BMW PE, it still has a chance of sounding really good.

Good luck to you!

Odd question; my car has 195k miles now (woo-hoo). I've been getting a persistent service reminder (non-resetable) and the red car-on-lift symbol. I saw something about it a long time ago, but I couldn't find it again. Does anyone know how to reset/delete this reminder?

Wow thanks for that I really appreciate it! I'll ask around local car pages and find a welder to work with. Quick question, would this j pipe be just attached to the exhaust or would there be a hole cut for it to be welded onto?

There would need to be a hole cut into the pipe somewhere, generally close to the exit (but before the tips.)

service needed, go have it checked out unless it was a light that wasn't reset

First Full Exterior Detail

Finally had time to properly detail the exterior of the car since picking it up in December. 5-step process including:
  1. Foam Bath / Powerwash
  2. Two-Bucket Hand wash with Mequiars Gold Class Wash
  3. Meguiars Clay Bar
  4. Meguiars Ultimate Compound Polish

She's so pretty now.

I also installed a Curt 1.25" receiver.

Interesting. If the pipe has to be an estimated 26" and before the tips I'm not sure if there is even enough space for it. I'll have to take some measurements. Might only be one location for it. Looking to find an AA gen 2 axle back but that's impossible.

Today i purchased a thin walled socket so i can change my spark plugs and coil packs over the weekend.

I currently have a misfires on cylinders 5 and 1 after putting MHD Stage 1 tune on her (yes i should have known better).

For 30 seconds she felt real nice.

Finally got around to replacing the belt, tensioner and idler pulleys. Job was actually very easy. I read the DIY threads and had prepared to wrestle with the fan for hours but it literally pulled right out and dropped right back in. Maybe I got lucky. Found the T60 at O'reillys for like 6 bucks. The belt was squeaking on startup and that is now gone so I'm happy.

Just FYI, I have the street exhaust not race, but even with the street the drone was terrible. I installed a vrsf downpipe a few months back, that helped quite a bit with the drone, not so noticeable anymore. Even with the street axle back cold starts are super loud, it was fun for a while, but I'm over it. Coding out with MHD this weekend.

Just curious, did you clear the code then swap coil packs around to see if the misfire follows the coil packs. I've changed all of my coil packs (one by one) due to misfires under a MHD tune.

Try clearing the codes, swap coil packs one and two around as well as five and six, then take it for a blast again until you get the misfires. Read the codes, if they are now on two and six you'll know it's the coil packs. They're Bosch, and about $40 each at Autozone. Save yourself some money, just buy all six now from FCP Euro and swap them all out.

I have the 4" catless and the race exhaust drone is terrible around 2500-3200 other than that it sounds amazing, loudness is fine. It's the drone the kills me. I don't do much highway driving as is. Was looking at the rogue DMS but it's rare and people say it does drone.

Yeah I cleared all the codes and did a little mix and match on the coils. I've got 6 new plugs and coils (overnight from Melb via clickableautomotive.com.au $45 each).

I'll change them over the weekend and see how it goes.
