Firehawk Indy 500 initial review.

Ditched the runbricks for a set of these.

Of course all of this is subjective but they ride nice and are quiet. Of course, besting the runbricks is a pretty low bar and easy to do!

They're no Michelin but for 97 bucks per corner, I'm happy with them for a DD.

I'll add more after I get them scuffed in a bit.

I've had my Indy 500's for almost a year now, ~10K miles. Love em, couldn't be any happier for the price

I don't need the last % of performance, and for the cost they meet, and exceed, my needs perfectly!

Great to hear! These are just my dailys.... don't need that last % of performance on them either.... I've certainly spent $400 more foolishly.

I just ordered some, my Hankook's were down to the wear bars. I'd like to think I need the highest performing tires I can find but when it comes down to it... I mostly drive to work and back and simply having "very good" tires will do. Especially yes for the price.

I'm ordering a set myself. How is the rear tire wear? I think I read somewhere on bimmerpost someone recommended ordering an extra sets of rears (and it would still be cheaper than 4 other tires).

That's got to depend on how you drive and your own car as well for under / oversteer. Go off of how your current / former sets of tires have worn.

For me it's the fronts that go a little faster.

Mine have worn really well, and I'm hoping to see at least another 15-20K out of em, but my drive is pretty tame compared to many here despite my best attempts at "bad attitude"....

I'd also suggest that if you have a god local indy shop that does alignments, particularly if they're into serving actual racers or autocrossers, that they give you an alignment suited to how you drive. If you tend to notice that you wear the inside or outside edges of your tires or something they may eb able to tweak a little to help counter that.

It's not a huge thing but it's something to consider as well.

Well, TireRack has them as the #1 tire in the uhp summer category, and I'd agree with the ratings they've earned. I'm in FL, and haven't had any rain/wet road problems with them.
Dry grip is slightly less than PSS, about DW quality in the dry.
Better than PSS in the wet, but not quite DW qualtiy.

Worth noting that the 500's are just the american version of the Bridgestone RE003. I found these things when shopping for another set of RE760's and learning that the 760's were obsolete, replaced with the 003.

I've had them on for less than 500 miles and I've not been naughty. Rating is UTQG: 340 A A

A little comparison between the Firestones and Kumho's:

Dad's Mk7 GTI (Sport, manual) got a set of Advanti Storm S1's with some Indy 500's (225/45R17) on them for Christmas just last year. I really love the tire on that car, the grip is way better than the stock Hankooks (Ventus Evo2's?), they ride better (downsized from 18's to 17's), are much more responsive, but, they make more of a humming/whirring sound than the Hankook's.

Right now, my car is on Sport Edition SE-16 (I know, I know) wrapped in Kumho Ecsta PS31's (one of the Indy's competitors) in 225/45ZR17 sizing all around. The Kumho has better wet grip (subjectively) than the Indy, are quieter than the Indy, and are MUCH more communicative than the Indy at-the-limit (i.e. good for a driver who's still learning, those suckers SCREAM!). However, they don't ride nearly as nicely as the Indy, don't have quite as much dry grip as the Indy, and don't have as crisp a response as the Indy.

So I'll chime in as I just installed these this week. I went with the 225/40R-18 in the front and the 255/35R-18 in the rear. I am going from the stock runflats. I am loving these tires.

I think a combination of the wider tire and non-runflat has made the traction control stop kicking in at all. I have a two-way stop to leave my neighborhood every morning across a busy road and inevitably, with the stock tires, 9 times out of 10, the stock tires would slip, traction control would kick in and de-power the the car, right in the middle of the intersection, as cars are coming at me at 45 mph. Went through there yesterday, intentionally pushing it and absolutely nothing. Car launched and stuck to the road no problem. Finally, not worried about getting t-boned and not having to turn off the traction control every single time I get in the car.

The stock tires would also get squirrely on our interstate mostly due to the ruts developed by the heavy trucks. So about 80 was the max, 120 was death grip on steering wheel. Ran the same section at 140 with the new tires and nothing. Car was smooth and didn't jump around. Again, I think because of the change in width as well as getting away from the runflats.

As for noise, they are slightly quieter but we also have a lot of aggregate in our roads which makes tires really noisy anyways. On smooth pavement, I suspect these tires would be very quiet.

Got these from TireRack and as always, no problems. They shipped promptly to an installer and followed up with emails to let me know when they were ready.

My 2.5 cents+tax+destination fee+surcharge+levy=$40

I had this on my 335i. great tires for the money, happily went over 80+ mph in the rain. They do get flat spots over night I found out, but after 500 feet of driving they become perfect again.

After having to replace three runflat tires in 20,000 miles, I said forget it. I was spending way more money than it was worth. Each time, they told me the tire needed to be replaced so if it can't be repaired, then for me, regular tires are worth every penny. I bought a jack and lug wrench off ebay and then use one of my winter wheels as a spare. I will also say, the bone jarring impact from the runflats is gone also.

A lot will depend on your roads too. Our roads are turning to crap pretty quick. Bridges on the interstate are missing 6" of roadway at the lip of the bridge, the elevated roadway joints are steel angles that have settled in places so there are 2"-3" vertical steps in the road, and then potholes are everywhere with chunks of concrete that used to be in the hole, now on the roadway.

Time will tell how these handle as I only have a little over 1,000 miles on them but much more happy to replace these at this price versus the runflats price.
