Alright I joined this mod today, I found that the 5/16th vacuum plug didn't stay in the actuator so I went back and bought one size down 5/32. This fit nice and wasn't loose at all. now for the tube I left the 5/16th male to male plug and the 5/16th plug on it. it was tight getting on there so it might stretch out the hose to the point where it won't stay on the actuator if I ever reverse the mod but if thats the case I will just cut a little off the hose.

Just thought I would share. Maybe the 135i and the 128i have a different size.

I gotta say I dont really notice *ANY* difference and I am the type of guy that noticed EVERYTHING... I did it at 100mi and were at like 138 now or so... idle sounds the same, only thing I noticed is it has SLIGHTLY more grown starting off from a stop for like 1sec

Yes the valve is open.

If you don't notice a differents try this. Reconnect the vacuum hose originally... start the car... Move to the rear of the car and disconnect the vacuum hose while the car is running.. you will hear the valve open and a slight increase in sound and exhaust flow from the rear. someone should do a dyno but its really not worth it to me.

Let it warm up a bit, then you'll notice a good change in sound. When cold, I don't hear much of a difference.

1. Is it just me or is the vacuum plug really hard to unplug? (I tried pretty hard, but I didn't want to pull any harder for fear of damage. I just ended up using a zip tie)

2. Are there any negative MPG implications of performing this mod? :iono:

thats a rubber hose thing... just try and twist it a bit aruond the fitting get it to break loose, then give it a tug.

Gas mileage implications should not be noticable.

I just did this today with a plastic cable tie, bent the hose, and put a loop of the cable tie over the bent hose, and tightened it. As for change, I didn't notice anything at all just idling, but when I was out, I was pulling out of a carpark at around 1100 revs, and the resonance just came out of it. My wife noticed it, and thinks it sounds great.

So now I have to decide between all the windows and sunroof open and the great engine noise, or everything closed up with the great audio from the Premium sound ... aaahhh choices choices !!!

Hi, I's trying to do this mod just now. but the 3/16" vacuum cap is too big for the nipple on the actuator. Is it necessary to plug the actuator nipple (i.e. if I don't plug that, will the flap be permanently closed instead of opened?)
Thanks

Im really confused......

Sorry guys this topic has be discussed ad nausium but this is what I have observed and the way I see it:

When you start the car cold, the flap is closed and exhaust gas exits from only the left (?) pipe. After a little while the flap opens with a little klank noise.

I find that with the flap closed (in the short period after initial start up), idle actually sounds deeper with the one pipe than with both pipes are open.

Now FIRSTLY if you were to disable the flap with the golf tee mod, you are going to have both pipes open all the time, to me this = quieter idle. SECONDLY, the default position of the flap after a few minutes is OPEN anyway, so why bother with the mod?:iono::iono:

So basically what I'm saying is with no mod, I get a deeper idle at start up (one pipe operating), and then after a few minutes once the flap opens (two pipes operating) I get exactly the same thing as a modded car.

I really appreciate comments on this one please....

At idle all the exhaust runs through the full muffler and out the rightside tip. Once you rev the motor the valve opens and allows some of the exhaust to "bypass" the muffler. The golf tee mod allows you to stay in the "bypass" mode all the time. Since the turbos keep the exhaust quiet not much of a muffler is required. At least that is how I understand it. I could be wrong...

The valve doesn't open with temperature, it opens with rpm. Even with the engine up to operating temp the valve is closed until you get over 3000 ish rpm.

No I don't think that is the case. When I first start up, there is definitely only one pipe working, after a short time, while still idling, the valve opens and both pipes emit exhaust gas. So it is not rpm driven on my car at least. Can you check if this is the case with your car?

If what you are saying is correct, then whenever rpm drops below 3000, only one pipe is working. No so.:iono:

I am certain mine did too, but in any case who the f cares... I absolutely positively noticed exhaust being a slight amount louder... better enough to spend a ton of time doing the mod? Probably not, enough to spend 5 seconds the mod takes to do? Absolutely.

Is there any diff between the cable tie method and the disconnect/plug method?
