1er turnover rate

is it me or do a lot of people turn in/sell their 1er soon as warranty is up?

also not to be judgmental but it seems like a lot of 1 series owner must have fat pockets. these thing are expensive to mod/ maintain!

Only if you take it to the stealership or don't do some of the routine maintenance yourself.

Agreed.

Then again I feel as tho every BMW owner trades in / sells after warranty due to maintenance cost. Probably what I will become because I doubt I'll like another car as much as I do the 1'r to justify the cost of keeping it forever... Unless it's a 991 GT3

Meh, I buy a car to drive it and hold on to it, not ditch them every couple years. I do most all the maintenance on my own as far as brakes, fluids, and things like that. Some repairs I haven't been able to do in the apartment parking lot, so it did cost a bit of money to have a shop repair it, but you gotta pay to play.

Depends on whether or not you have a 128 or a 135. My wife's 128i isn't expensive to maintain at all - no worse than anything else. It's paid for, just went out of warranty, and we'll keep it for quite awhile, as it's a relatively rare M-Sport convertible with 6MT and PE. So far, we have only had 1 issue - a manifold sensor - that was taken care of under warranty. I could have replaced it myself for no more than the cost of the part.

As has been said before, if you take care of it and be diligent with preventive maintenance (oil changes, coolant flush, brake flush, etc.), it should stay healthy. A good Indy shop will help with the items you can't do by yourself at a lower cost than at the dealership.

I think there are different types of 1 owners. Being the lowest priced BMW model means that some got it to have a nice car for a reasonable lease/ finance cost. Those people likely move on to the next good new car deal, and based on what I've seen at the BMW dealerships, that next car is unlikely to be a BMW, as prices on the 2 series are at a whole different level.

I'm not turning mine over; it's the right combo of what I need, it's a vert, and I have a secret weapon in the form of a mechanic nephew. Just had the complete 60K service done for $350, so I'm sticking with it.

Remember that 1-series buyers, especially the ones that spend a lot of time on this forum, are generally "car guys" for whom their car is kind of a hobby and not just transportation from point A to point B.

So spending money on your car is more than just routine maint. as if you owned an Accord or Camry.

I plan on dumping my 2012 135i DCT. Too many issues, too many dash rattles. 340i next.

I'm still here BrokenVert! Closing in on 7 years this July. Still love driving it even with the maintenance $$$. I may get another car for the winter tho. That will slow down the miles and the maintenance on the 1er.

Woo! Great to see you!

I'm eying up a Fiesta ST as a new daily for the same reason. I have 115k on the 1er and I'm thinking that's enough.

And I know what you mean. I'm losing 2-3k a year to maintenance.

I bought my 08 new in 08, just put brake pads in today it's at 50k miles now. Never driving in the rain or bad weather sure makes a difference, everything looks brand new, not a drop of oil leaking anywhere I credit that to proper low rpm driving until the oil temp starts to move

I might be switching to an evora or 4C next year though

+1.

With routine maintenance and the like, I owned my E36 for 18 years and had only one major problem: a blown diff.

I signed up to be a member in June 2014, but I've been a lurker since 2008, when I bought my first 135i.

I must've read every post ever written here.

I remember you two from way back. Kinda feel like we're old friends.

2008 135i have 80k ... And I'm holding on to her... Too much fun to drive... I've had many parts replaced most through the dealership under warranty such as the tranny... Luckily I do have a friend who is a mechanic to do the maintenance from this point on doing brakes in the next 5k

I will be keeping my 1er but plan on getting a DD for winter. Maybe 1 more winter for my 1er.

I just hit 90K, made me wince, but have recently had a clutch, battery, brakes, WP, starter, oil housing gasket repaired all in the last 18 months. Next month shocks, walnut blast and since they will have the covers removed from the engine will have the coils and plugs replaced. I am now using an independent mechanic that does euro cars and should save me 30% on what the dealer will charge.....it's an addiction!

I have to do the oil filter housing gasket on my car. This years maintence is that plus new DVs and all suspension components (shocks and springs plus bushings). I think its finally time to go coilovers and M3 parts

Just turned in my 3-year lease and bought a replacement. Plan on keeping it indefinitely, but in a few years it might stop being my DD to prolong its longevity, or at least a fair-weather only ride. Eyeing a Focus RS as a winter driver when they come out.

What is DV? I am planning on keeping the stock springs (don't want to lower the car) Indy shop recommended Bilstein HD. But, I only need the rears now to pass state inspection. Indy mechanic said he will check the fronts but normally the rears wear out first.
