You weren't driving by a golf course or driving range? Years ago I was going past a driving range and got a hood ding about that size.

I wish it was from that so I could tee off and blast the golf ball right back into the golfer's stomach.

No, this was a backroad near my house surrounded by trees. Homes are like an acre away from the road and that point where I heard the pop there were no homes around me.

Damn, that is one big ass walnut! At what height would a walnut create that big a dent?

I know modern cars are not that tough, but that would have to have been one record sized walnut! Bummer no matter what it was.

Parents Mini got hit with a falling nut of some sort and broke a headlight AND dented their hood quite badly. Some of those things are huge and heavy as hell. I now have a giant avocado tree in my backyard and would hate to see one of those softball sized things drop on my 1er

Oddly enough, a neighbor of mine has a huge tree with some kind of (I think non-edible) fruit on it nearly the size of an orange, and one just fell and hit the street today near where I was walking. I think it would have knocked me out!

I would think the city wouldn't allow stuff like that to be dangling over a street or sidewalk, since it's a public hazard. I wouldn't drive or walk down that street on a windy day.

I had an avocado tree in the backyard of a previous home I used to own many years ago. I had a dog at the time and he loved to eat the ones that fell from the tree. I was always cleaning up green dog shit. lol

I was gonna call BS on a walnut doing that, but then read accounts of acorns denting people's hoods and roofs! (I got hit by falling acorns last weekend. Sure I can feel it, but not enough to worry about anything. Perhaps, at 60ft, my oaks are kinda small.)

Anyway, I decided to do some math.
Black walnut trees can get up to 150ft tall! Call it 30m average.
Would reach 25m/s, about 55ish mph.
Bigger than a golf ball, smaller than a baseball. Heavier than a golf ball, lighter than a baseball. Baseball leaves the bat at 110mph, but slows fairly rapidly in flight. Call it 50mph as it reaches the parking lot.
Golf ball will leave the tee at 140 up to 180mph, but usually going closer to 45 or 50mph by the time they hit the ground. Call it 70mph as it pummels your car.

Baseball at 50mph = 36J energy. 3" / 75mm diameter.
Golf ball at 70mph = 20J energy. 1.9" / 45mm diameter.
Estimating 100g (3oz) black walnut fruit in the hull, and 2"/50mm diameter:
Walnut at 55mph = 30J energy.
That'll do it!
(Diameter doesn't play into energy calculations, but distributing that energy over a larger surface decreases the likelihood/severity of damage at impact.)

Avocados falling from the 60' tree in my neighbor's yard broke the plastic canopy underneath, dents the aluminum one, and wakes the dead when they hit.

This post alone dominates this subject. Great research!!

Also nice pulp fiction reference from the above poster!

Let's go deeper!

Whats the thickness of the metal at the A pillar?

What grade/strength of steel is used? (really what's our modulus of elasticity E)

The potential/kinetic energy the walnut has doesn't depend on diameter, but like you said force applied to the metal will (σ= Force/Area)

Given the force and a decent model of the A pillar we could figure out exactly which trees to avoid driving under (we could just assume its a sheet of steel with thickness t, similar dimensions, supported at the edges, etc.)

Math is fun, but ya'll forget a piece of foam took out a space shuttle? There's some tragic math for you.

Wonder how much damage a walnut could do if it was moving sideways at roughly 120 mph.....

Because it was just a bit breezy in my neighborhood today...

Thanks, and yeah we/the tally area did pretty alright. Lotsa folks without power, and over the next few days many of them will be on the news whining like spoiled little girls...

Just a very few miles to the west of us folks were devastated. Where it really hit it was a brutal ugly nasty bastard. Every bit as bad as you're reading about.

Notes from USA Today:

It is the third-strongest storm on record to hit the United States by barometric pressure.
• It is the fourth-strongest storm on record to hit the U.S. by wind speed.
• It is the strongest October hurricane on record to hit the U.S.
• Michael is the strongest storm in recorded history - a Category 4 - to ever hit the Panhandle.
• Michael is just the fourth major hurricane - Category 3, 4 or 5 - to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle since 1950, joining Eloise (1975), Opal (1995) and Dennis (2005).
