Well I can comfortably say after nearly 18 months my 1M conversion from a bodywork perspective is complete. It has taken a bit longer than anticipated but I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges thrown up, and honestly appreciate the assistance and guides from 1 Addicts members, who have either done one themselves or have some great knowledge.

It is now time to drive and enjoy and I have already attended a couple of Cars & Coffees in Adelaide and the car scrubs up great.

I also have some interior plans in line with my alcantara BMW Performance steering wheel so stay tuned for some more upgrades.

Out of curiosity, how much did this cost you?

Was it more or less than 10k?

More. Parts alone - panels (+ shipping), wheels & exhaust were $10k. I also had the rear guards hand fabricated in steel not Prior glass ones so it can be done a lot cheaper.

Yes thanks I had a firm idea in mind and really pleased with the result. Getting some great comments at the local cars & coffee & I have put a lot into the detail.

Bilstein B8's now installed and makes a huge difference to the handling. It now feels like it should and returns a lot of confidence back into driving this car.

I have also installed a 1M copy alcantara interior trim (white stitching)complete inc instrument hood, handbrake and gear gaiters, front and rear door trims. This was purchased from a member who decided not to proceed with his project. Instal was fairly straight forward using a combination of 1 Addicts and various DIY videos.

Almost happy to say the car is complete with the exception of a set of Recaro CS Sportsters. I trust at some point I will find an affordable set - have toyed with converting a Renault set but not convinced it will save me much in the end.

Car looks great!

You need to get some blackline tail lights on there IMO.

So the front and rear bumpers plus front skirts are OEM genuine 1M? And then the rear fender is molded to line everything up?

Id love to go down this route - but it seems to be hellish expensive. Any estimates for your total costs so far on bodywork?

Cheers

I thought about the lights but I don't really notice or see the difference so maybe when I have to replace one I might look at it.

Yes the OEM front, side skirts and rear bumper when fitted make up the template for the rear guards. The new guards are simply built to tie these lines together. I took plenty of photos and provided examples of other projects to the body shop to help. The only thing I got wrong was not rolling the rear lip or removing altogether like the real 1M.

All up including wheels and selling some parts it has cost around $18k. This inc $10k to fit and paint parts & panels and create the rear guards. Given how much of the car was painted I think it is pretty reasonable and comparable to a full paint job yet I got the car stripped and rebuilt and some metal work thrown in. Is $18k hellishly expensive? I don't think so when I think of the quality and depth of the work and the pretty neat end product, and one can easily spend this on performance upgrades or even basic maintenance on an N54 over time!!

Nice one! Sorry, I only just saw this. That’s pretty good. So you bought the OEM body parts from ECS? I want to see what the individual parts cost but have only seen ball park figures so far.

Hi part numbers and USD cost (in 2017) below. If you go onto the ECS website you can plug in these numbers and create a cart and then convert the total. The items marked # you either reuse the 135i one and the others it depends on what route you take. You may not need the rear 1/4s if you go custom or Prior Design f/glass. You only need the rear bumper carrier if you are going proper 1M exhaust. If you do that you will need further parts.

Thanks for the detailed list!

From what I hear, a lot of people skip the rear quarters for steel fabricated (like you did). How much do you think this saved you?

Is the above price if you purchase the quarters or if you fabricate like you did?

Thanks for all the advice! Its such a big project, it's hard to take it all in haha

Apologies not been on lately.

The big difference with the OEM v fabricated is the freight cost. Freight was USD 1000 but with the quarters it was USD 4000 plus around 1100 to purchase. So the additional freight and the cost of the panels were over half of my total fit and paint bill so yes fabricated was definitely cheaper. If the freight wasnt so high or I could get them thru a local BMW dealer I would have gone that way.

The above price is the OEM part cost not what I paid to fabricate. In the US they quote USD 1000 per side and I reckon $1000 per side was pretty close to what I paid maybe a bit more. I got quoted a job lot which was strip, fit, modify, paint and build so didnt get a break down

Great job on the build mate.

I'm starting this process shortly and your thread will be a massive help.

I'm interested with why BMW won't sell 1M parts without you owning one though. Doesn't seem logical, a sale is a sale right?!

Has anyone had any push back like this from dealers in VIC?

Cheers.

Each state is different. Only one BMW dealer in Adelaide I tried to get a quote but they wanted 1M vin. The s65 conversion got his parts from a dealer in Qld so if you are in Vic keep trying dealers
