Wow, I didn't realize that the Dinan reflash was already available for the 135. That's great news.

I called Dinan myself and they said I can just install the tune and follow whatever break in period is recommended by BMW.

Hmm, I guess I will have to start saving for the Dinan tune. I just dropped a bundle on wheels and tires.

I can't believe this is already out. My local Dinan/BMW Dealer said this would take a couple months to test.

that's what worries me a little. how much testing has actually been done? are they just assuming it should work on the 1er because it is so similar to the 3er? i'm a little concerned still.

Oh man! I think I'll wait for a few thousand miles first. But this is definitely something I will do.

My local dealer is a Dinan shop. They have already done several 335s and will do 135s before it leaves the show room floor. I see no reason to wait since you have to break in the motor anyway.

I'm not concerned about the whole warantee thing. My dealership seems to be very mod friendly. I'm only leaning toward Dinan for the reliability. My only thoughts about it are what about putting on an exhaust? I wonder if Dinan will develop different tunes for that and what it would intail to get it. Obviously, all the piggyback tuners take care of this. Curious how Dinan will deal with it. Even with their own exhaust system.

Oh ya, you will like this. I asked my dealer how much for the reflash. He said $2500. I said, "Well the tune is $2000. Is there labor involved, or some other work that needs to be done?" He said, "No, no labor or anything, that is just how much it costs." Bastards.

I am not sure why people are so confused or dumbfounded by the fact that a Dinan tune is already available for the 135i. Because it has the exact same motor (N54) as the 335i and the Dinan tune has been available for that for months.

Same engine, same tune. Why is that hard to understand or accept?

That is crazy! A software patch or version upgrade NEVER costs more than the original full program itself - in any industry AFAIK. He must have had some crack stuffed into the tips of his cigarettes! How did he get his job?? :bs:

He didn't blink when he said it. It's at Winslow in the Springs. 25% markup on a software flash. Crazy.

My dealer (Knauz, north of Chicago) quoted $2000 for the Dinan upgrade.

Well it's done! Just got back from getting the Dinan tune.

My initial observations are exactly in line with the comments made on E90 forum. There's definitely more pep and butt in seat torque at the higher rpms. But 1st gear is a bit sluggish. You really have to dump the throttle in first gear ... feels like the torque isn't as level as the stock tune....it ramps up and you really notice the improvement around 4k. At the moment though I've got to learn how to drive this new tune.

People on other forums say it you eventually love it but it takes a few days for either you or the computer to adjust. Right now it's different and I'll need some time to learn how to drive the car all over again.

Don't take this as a negative impression ... it's definitely got more pep at middle to higher rpms ... i just wish it were more responsive down low in 1st. I suspect my brain will adjust for this tune and I'll find the sweet spots quickly.

we shall see!

edit: just in case there was any question, it is exactly the same tune they put in the 335 and 535.

edit2: just to clarify my concern with the low rpms in 1st gear wasn't explained well. all i meant was that a small depression of the throttle didn't produce the same immediate response as i was used to in stock. depressing the pedal further than i was accustom to produced plenty of torque.

^^ it will take some time for the ecu to adapt to the change. just go out and drive it hard

as for the price, some dealers on the e90 forums are doing 10% off the dinan tune which put its at 2000 out the door.

yeah i'm hoping so. it's interesting reading the e90forum threads on this. many people HATED the tune the first day. after a few days they appear to have all had a change of heart. i'm not sure if it is really the computer adjusting or your brain adjusting to the new map but it is interesting to see people's opinions shift.

i'm pretty ambivalent right now.... sorta missing the low-down pull but i'll stick it out for a hundred miles or so and re-evaluate.

no regrets yet. :w00t:

went driving tonight. as many WOTs as i could in bad atlanta traffic.

1) gf notes that ride is much more smooth than before. i hadn't mentioned to her that many people have said this on the e90forum as well.

2) liking the tune much much better. no clue whether i'm adjusting my driving style or if the onboard computer is adjusting for the tune.

3) the engine gurgles more. it sounds more aggressive.

4) the car flies. ridiculously fast for normal use.

Do you notice the extra 100 ft-lb of torque?

it clearly has more torque up high (3-6k rpms) but if you asked me i wouldn't have guessed that it was 100 ft-lb worth. it doesn't feel like a one-third increase in torque. however, keep in mind i had very limited time with the car as delivered so it's a little hard to judge. i didn't have the stock performance seared into my brain before making the switch.

definitely an improvement though ... and the sound is really good. the car sounds mean. i don't need a faster car that this.

EDIT: just noticed that if you look at the Dinan PDF on the software, it really is only a 100 ft-lb difference at 4k rpms. It tapers off down to 40-60 ft-lb at the top and bottom. That makes more sense and matches what I felt in the butt-dyno.

I may be doing the Dinan tune also on the 135i. The website does not mention the addition for the Dinan oil cooler for the 135i like it does for the 335i. Is this not reccomended for the 135i as well? Should I be worried getting the tune without the Dinan oil cooler upgrade. My 135i will have the factory oil cooler, as I'll be getting the Sport Package. Did anyone call Dinan and ask about that? I don't want to risk shortened engine life if I dont have the larger oil cooler.
