Oh, okay - is there something about the diffuser that makes it a requirement to remove for this install, or is it just that it made the work easier and that it was itself not too much of a pain to remove?

Just gives you easier access. Working the rubber hangers off takes a bit a muscle and that's certainly easier with the diffuser off.

Finally did this install today. Thanks to Mike for a great, easy-to-follow DIY. The hardest part by far was removing the rubber bushing from the left side exhaust hanger - man, what a bitch that was. I ended up having to cut the damn thing a little in order to release the stock exhaust. The second hardest part was getting the new exhaust to fully seat in the same bushing. Lots of grunting and cursing today.

The problem, I think, was that since I don't have the M-Sport body kit, there was no rear diffuser to remove, so I was working behind the bumper. I should have probably just removed the whole bumper cover - it would have given me room to work and made the whole process much easier. As it was, I ended up really contorting my hands to try to free the stock exhaust and it took a while. There just wasn't much room to work.

Oh well, the job is done and it sounds great. Love the burbling on downshifts and of course the grunt on cold starts. And give it some gas and it sounds really racy, especially with the windows down and a wall or something close by to bounce the sound back at you.

If you haven't heard it before, it sounds pretty close to stock, just "more." It like they turned the volume up but also tweaked things to sound just slightly more serious without sounding like some ridiculous riced-out Civic. And I hear it only gets better with time. Definitely looking forward to it.

One question for Ulrich - what is that piece you have circled in red in the upper left corner? Looks like a black rubber cylinder or something. My stock exhaust had no such piece.

The only thing I would add to the DIY is that if you want to use the "proper" socket to remove the right-side exhaust hanger, it's an E10. Maybe a lot of people don't have external torx sockets, and apparently an 8mm works fine, but in the interest of thoroughness I thought I'd contribute some small piece of info.

Did this install today right after taking delivery of our new 128i M-Sport. Used some 1.5" wide blue tape to wrap around the pipe as it came out from the stock muffler, and then cut the pipe at the edge of the tape. Nice clean cut and managed to do it with a hacksaw in about 15 minutes. Pulled the left side rubber hanger off the frame rather than trying to pull the muffler out of the hanger, and then pulled the hanger off after the muffler was off the car. Put it back together (with the new muffler) the same way and it was all very easy. Great looks, great sound, very much worth it!!

Glad it went smoothly. It's a nice exhaust, isn't it? I only have about 100 miles on mine, so I'm curious to see where it ends up tone-wise. But so far I'm pleased.

The new 128i cabrio didn't have that "vibration absorber", so that remains a mystery. The PE is somewhat loud, and on the initial drive (about 30 miles round trip), I did feel a little resonance in the floorboard, but again, that was with less than 100 mi. on the car and even less on the exhaust. Overall, I like it and so does my wife, who does most of the driving since it's her car.

Did anyone find that after installing this the right (passenger side) tailpipe sits a little lower?

It looks centered in the diffuser cutout but the two tips are not parallel to the ground.

About $700 for the 128i or less(BMW List price is $1,400, but no one pays that!). Look around on ebay.com or ask your dealer for a price quote. Tischer sells them for $700, but then you pay for shipping and it comes in a big heavy box!

Just did my install over the weekend! I started late Friday night and I couldn't finish in time due to lack of light. I opted to leave the hanger bolted in for the right-side, and just used an extra healthy serving of wd-40 to slide the exhaust right out of the bushing. I did the same for both bushings/hangers and it only took me about 20 minutes. I have the non-m bumper so I couldn't remove anything to free up some extra space. It was tough to maneuver up in there at first but I was able to use a tiny flat-head screwdriver to get in between the bushing and the exhaust and slide it out that way. Other than getting the exhaust out of the bushings, the install was a breeze!

If you have the vibration absorber, like my 2010 coupe does, I would leave that off the new exhaust until after it is installed... that little rubber absorber weighs nearly as much as the rest of the exhaust!

Of course, the sound is amazing. I also had some vibration in the floorboards on my first drive but it went away after one highway drive. I can't wait to hear some of the mellow burbles once I break the exhaust in.
