The car is a 2012 135i DCT with manual seats, no auto-dimming side mirrors (the rear view mirror is auto-dimming however).

It seems some of you have this feature even with manual seats so what gives here?
Did they tilt previously and now don't?

Tried that too, nothing seems to work. ISTA doesn't show any faults in the FRM/mirrors either. I'm thinking for whatever dumb reason, this car simply doesn't have the hardware (whatever that may be).

It has normal power mirrors, non-auto dimming & non-heated, non-folding.

Nope. I just bought it and it doesn't tilt. The power adjustment controls are perfectly fine though.

If your car have manual seats the tilt down function will not work. It only works with full power seats.

I've only had the car for about 6 months, but the mirrors only occasionally tilted when in reverse. Randomly. And when I put it in drive, I would have to re-adjust the passenger mirror back. I tried going to the manual for instructions, but still random. After the DME flash last week, they work like it is supposed to. Don't know why...

I checked mine today. Mirror adjuster switch for the passenger side and the right morror tilts. Move it to passenger and it won't tilt.

Feels like reading an oil thread.

My passenger side mirror dips in reverse when the selection switch is in the left position. My salesman showed me that feature on the day I picked up the car in February, 2011.

At some point in the past, I used a BMW Vin Decoder website (don't remember which one) and got a full listing of all features on my 2011 135i. In the list of options on my car was this line item:

S430A Interior/outside mirror with auto dip

This was not grouped under any particular heading. All I have is a complete set of options, and this was one of the items listed.

I cannot find any reference to an exterior auto dip mirror in the 2011 sales booklet, but I do see lots of references to outside power mirrors with memory presets when the car is equipped with power seats or the Premium Package, which mine has. I feel like there might be a relationship to one of those options.

My car does not have Comfort Access.

Hope this helps someone.

Peace... Mack
