1M KW CLUBSPORTS-Review
This weekend I spent the day and did some car related stuff. I weighed my car, installed a set of KW Clubsports & removed the CDV.
When I decided that I was going to trade in my E90 M3 for a 1M i knew the KW Clubsport was the coilover of choice. I had them on my E90 M3 and was nothing short of impressed. It is very compliant on the street yet very capable on track. My car is dual duty which means I ask alot of my equipments ability to excel in both aspects. The build quality is top notch and reliability had proven to be fantastic. I have had experience with other coilovers on previous car in which blown shocks were a common issue. After about a month of trying to confirm whether the non-edc E92/E90 M3 kit would work in the 1M I got a very pleasing call from SAM @ AUTOTALENT that it was the same kit. I had ordered my previous kit through Sam so naturally he was the guy to call. My only gripe with my previous kit was the method of bump adjustment, Sam mentioned to me that KW had revised this with a new click style knob. 24hrs later my updated kit was in the mail. I would like to thank Sam for staying in contact with me even though he knew I had no intention of buying a new kit if my old one fit. He really showed he actually cared and was not just trying to make a sale. He provided EXCELLENT customer service and great pricing on the new kit. The clubsports are double adjustable, 500/800 spring rates, camber plates and have more aggressive valving then variant line. 12 bump adjustments with 18 rebound adjustments make it a very versatile kit. Install went relatively smooth with no hiccups. I lowered the car 1 inch all around and kept the 1 inch rake from front to rear measured using the fenders as a reference point. The kit really has transformed the car. I still need to do an alignment, but the car feels 100% more focused and like a go kart. The steering response is now instant and the car feels solidly planted to the ground. I have yet to take it to the track as I only had the car a week and am still in break in but this thing is going to be nuts. I have attached some pics for your viewing pleasure. More pics to come once I can get a proper photoshoot with my buddy's VO 1m who also installed the Clubsports and is loving them.

Congrats! When you say its compliant on the streets, how would you compare it to stock?

Its definately alot more aggressive then stock. For the level of performance it provides its very forgiving on the streets. Every aspect of the road is transmitted through the steering wheel and the seat of your pants. The stock suspension is alot softer and more forgiving on large bumps in the road. On a very smooth road both are equally as comfortable.

I wish I could say that was my garage and my cars, but my friend was kind enough to let us use his lift and the cars all have different owners.
My car is optioned with just bluetooth. It came in at 3322 on a full tank, while we also weighed a fully loaded 1M with everything except heated seats which came in at 3360 on a full tank. I plan on getting back on the scales once the springs settle a bit and doing a full cornerbalance.

So power seats + HK + idrive add something in the neighborhood of ~38lbs over a stripped 1M. You're sure the loaded car has full tank?
For the weight conscious - conservatively you could take another 4 lbs off each corner w/ a set of lightweight 19's (21lbs vs 25lbs), to get down to 3306 overall. Darn light for a modern performance 2+2. |

If only it was a little easier to allocate a 1M...maybe we would trade in our E90 M3 too...haha
Car looks great! I can't wait to hear your track impressions.

I was sure hoping for a lot less than that. I may have to order some options when my slot comes up. That is just crazy that. I would have thought manual seats would have been a good 100lbs alone to get the car in the low 3200 range. That is just too heavy.... (for autox)

If the 1M's rear seat backs and seat cushions are as easy to remove and weigh as much as those in my e36 coupe.... then stripper + light wheels + temporary rear seat removal should get you well below 3300.
After that you're looking at costly body panels or compromised cold cranking capacity (lightweight battery). I swear the rear seat backs from my e36 must have weighed 30lbs each. |

Congrats on the KW Clubsports! They are an excellent dual purpose street/track setup that doesn't break the bank.
The rear seats are HEAVY. Take them out if you can. This chassis is pretty easy to get down to below 3000lbs with just unbolting stuff. On our 135i we are right around 3100# w/o driver. This is race weight with all glass, door panels, fuel and a full cage. |

Great info!!
Clubsports are the same as M3 but NOT the Variant 3. KW has a separate Variant 3 application for the 1M - 35220095

Hopofthese's corner balance sheet:
Notes: Fuel was added after the baseline from 1/4 tank to 3/4 tank (thats the added 40 lbs) This car has every option except heated seats and is completely stock with the exception of the KW Clubsports. Corner weights were taken with 215 lbs driver, but ride height measurements were taken without driver. Ride height measurements are taken from the bottom of the fender to the bottom of the wheel. If you would like to convert this to measurements to the center of the hub (because you have a different wheel), subtract 10 1/4 (which is half the 20 1/2 actual diameter of this particular wheel from lip to lip). For example, the Left Rear measured 23 inches, which converts to 12 3/4 inches to the center of the hub. Last edited by Stee; 08-02-2011 at 09:06 AM.. |
