Worn Steering Wheel?

My Car has about 2000 miles on it and it seems like in the area where I keep my hand, the steering wheel is all worn out already. It is discolored in a lighter color (kind of white). I had my last car which didn't start any sign of wear for over 75,000 miles. I used some leather conditioner/cleaner and it didn't do much justice. Does anyone else here have that experience? I just don't want to have a 2000mile old car with the steering wheel all discolored and worn looking. Thanks.

Its going to the dealership today to have its clear bra redone...If I bring it up...do you think they'll just say deal with it?

Do you wear hand cream or any other products on your hands?

That might be it and that's probably what BMW will tell you. They will make up some story about how the cream wears out the leather.

Try using some Lexol leather conditioner or 303 Aerospace Protectant on the steering wheel.

I get white marks all over my car from the makeup that I wear. I've tried switching different kinds but they all do it.

I have seen a lot of issues with BMW steering wheels... The E46 had a serious issue with the leather steering wheel becoming shiny and the E46 ZHP was known to have its alcantera suede steering wheel peel. I personally think that it is a matter of just how far people are willing to go to keep there car looking good. Personally, I always try to wash my hands thoroughly before getting into my car, I don't use any lotions or creams on my hands and if my hand starts to sweat I drive with my knucles/ tops of my fingers. I move my hands around the wheel alot when I am just doing easy city driving so that the wheel will not wear in just one position. And as lame as it sounds driving gloves are on my christmas list to keep hand oils ouut of my car... If only my passengers had the same amount for my car as I do, I am always having to clean up scuff marks because no one understands the idea that scuff marks are not a normal thing in my car!

Well, it is very likely the lotion. Leather is absorbent/porous. I means it will suck that lotion right inside of it, either directly from your hands or from the sweat off your hands. Not a whole lot that can be done about that other than to get leatherette, a steering wheel cover, or wear gloves.

I would suspect sweaty palms more than skin lotion. Are you a salesman by any chance?

I remember getting the white marks 3 weeks after I first got the car, I know for fact that it is not the leatherette itself changing color, its a residue off my hand. It comes off "easily", but you have to go between the grains of the leatherette. Going over it with a piece of cloth wont do the trick as you have to get in there. I use a soft brush making sure not to scratch the leathertte...

I am curious where this stuff comes from, I do not use any lotions what so ever...i think it just plain "epidermis"

hopes this helps

hmmm..thats a possibility (something getting into the grains) i guess when i get my baby back..i'll try to clean it better....BMW just called to tell me theres a scratch on my front bumper and a dent hence why my clear bra isn't holding properly... I would say all Hell is about to break loose since there wasn't a dent on the car, and the clear bra was never applied properly!!
