bmw 135i caliper painting (socal region)
I want to get my 135i brake calipers powder coated yellow. Anybody know a good place to get this done in the Southern California region? Thanks in advance.

I'd be interested in doing this too, the problem is I need my car M-F, 8-5 while I'm at work.
If anyone knows a way to do this in one day, on a weekend, that'd be great!

If you stay with powder coating, the only way I can think of to do it in a day is to do it yourself. You can buy a little powder coating application tool, I think eastman sells one, and then bake the parts in your oven. Your wife might not like you using the oven this way but I don't think it would really hurt it. I think you have to apply powder coating to raw metal, however, and if your existing calipers are painted, you would need to remove that. Most practical way would be to grit blast them but that takes more equipment.
If paint is acceptable, that is quicker and does not require removal of the calipers. I painted my stock calipers using a kit I got from JEGs. It was pretty cheap, maybe $25. I used red but they have multiple colors. All you do is clean the caliper, the kit includes brake cleaner for this, and brush on the paint. It holds up pretty well. I did this a couple years ago and it seems to still be there - I don't clean the brake dust off throughly to be really sure exactly how well it has help up. The calipers are obviously still quite red. The stock caliper on my 128i is rough and this makes it hold brake dust pretty well. Here's a link to the paint I used - I used the kit which brushes on but they also sell it in aresol cans: http://duplicolor.com/products/caliperPaint/ It comes in bright yellow and several other colors. No sir, i took it to my friend's dad shop, but i wouldn't recommend anyone going there after how rude his dad was towards me. Basically, he told me that he can paint my calipers, and he has all the tools necessary to do it all for 200$.
Dropped the car off. Later in the evening he calls me and states that "he needs to order a mini paint gun because the calipers are to big, and he is going to have to pay for it out of his own pocket". Well not my problem considering he told me he can do it. Plus what kind of paint shop doesn't have all the necessary paint equipment? All in all, he got angry at me because he didn't make a profit. However, he did a good job for what i paid for. |

The biggest issue with doing a good job painting the calipers is getting them off, clean, painted, back on and the lines bled. The actual painting takes a few minutes. The other stuff will take hours. To make my 128i calipers look really good they need smoothed up. That would take hours.
I don't know why somebody would say they needed a mini-gun unless they were trying to paint with the calipers still on the car. I did that with a brush but wouldn't with a spray gun because of over-spray. If the calipers are off the car, the only difference the size of the gun makes is how much paint you need. You could use less with a mini-gun but a large gun will paint the calipers. The paint I used was pretty cheap. Paint for the exterior of a car is far from cheap but I wouldn't think it could take the heat that a caliper can get to. Jim

Tycho, did you get them painted all in one day? How long did you wait before you are able to drive again? I have heard that you might need to let the paint get dry?
